I know this is an annual debate of sorts...

...but why do we have eight official seeds and the rest unseeded? What's wrong with seeded directional regions? The bracket is somewhat regionalized anyway.

Just for sake of argument, I did this with what could easily be East and West Regions with the teams actually there. It's actually not all that bad. On THIS side of the bracket, there's only one semi-upset.

#E4 Fordham d. #E5 Sacred Heart
#E6 IN State d. #E3 E KY
#W3 UNI d. #W6 SFA
#W4 UM d. #W5 U of SD

#E1 UNH d. #E4 Fordham
#E2 TN-Chattanooga d. #E6 IN State
#W2 IL State d. #W3 UNI
#W1 EWU d. #W4 UM

#E2 TN-Chattanooga at #E1 UNH
#W2 IL State at #W1 EWU

Looks pretty good to me. Of course, the way the hoops committee works, the matchups might have been a bit different. But the seeded regions ALWAYS make more sense to me....

That doesn't really answer anything, GATW. We're already regionalizing, anyway. Sure, you might have to tweak the lines a bit to keep Liberty out of Missoula in the first round, for example. But those East and West Regions were pretty close to the ideal.

Because there is a mathematical possibility that the best team from any league has 4 losses while another league can produce three teams with 0 or 1 loss. Since the leagues are regional, you could have nobody from the east, or south or west that is deserving of a seed. Seeding by regions could give a crappy team a much easier shot at the quarterfinals.

THIS is the explanation I was looking for. Good points, and explained very well.

Thank you, Flaggy....

We don't want FCS to be like DII with strict, rigid regions that force everyone to play the same playoff opponents every year.
