SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State and head football coach Jody Sears agreed in principle to a three-year contract extension, it was announced today. The agreement, which will require approval from the California State University Chancellor's office, will make Sears the head coach through the 2017 season.
"I am pleased with the way the 2014 season transpired and the way the football team, and its head coach, performed and represented the University," Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez said. "The football program connects the institution to the Sacramento community and the alumni. The feedback from this season has been both positive and supportive of Coach Sears and the direction in which the program is headed."
Took over during a tumultuous off season and kept the team together to get a 7-5 (4-4 BSC) record. Not surprised by the move, my only concern is he inherited a stacked roster. Hopefully he can take this program a step or two further.
There was a fan push to oust Sears early on, but it seemed like he righted the ship and won over some of those same fans.
Personally, I think that they're just ecstatic that none of SH's choices came to fruition.
SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
The Hornets had a good start to the season, waned in the middle against the tough opponents and then when Hornet teams typically pack it in for the season this team finished strong and won the last 3 games. Aside from the coaching turmoil he did inherit a talented roster and soft schedule so this could easily just be a “right time, right place” kinda thing but we’ll see how it plays out.
I wasn’t really a fan of Sears but the way this team played down the stretch kinda won me over (for now). Sears will need to figure something out on defense and very soon we will see how this coaching staff does on the recruiting trail. Hiring Sears definitely beats the “hire some guy from a local JC” alternative. Last thing we need to do is offer some coach on the job training at the D1 level. Been there, done that, no thanks.
