I don't like the man, but he makes a great point...

Post by Ibanez »

Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), the first black senator elected in the South since the Reconstruction era, is no fan of racially tinged Democratic attacks on his party.

"If you look at [Gov.] Bobby Jindal in Louisiana — a person of color. Look at my governor, Nikki Haley — a person of color. And now myself. The South has made so much progress. And the best thing that folks like Mr. Rangel can say is that he's going to harken back to a 100 years ago, or 70 ago. Let's talk about tomorrow," Scott said.

"South Carolina voters vote their values and their issues — and not my complexion," Scott said. "This is a great sign for what's happening throughout the South, but certainly a fantastic sign for the evolution that has occurred in South Carolina."

For reference, a largely conservative, white, middle class population has elected him.

 No. I've met him several times over the years, mostly when we he was on county council and he has this holier than thou attitude. Maybe he's earned it, but he's arrogant like Obama. He says he wants to help low income families, but since he's been in Congress (since 2011) he hasn't done anything.
Spoiler: show
Maybe it's because low income families aren't his target market, per se.
He loves the middle class. He's done some great stuff for Charleston and the state. He's very pro-business. But personally, I don't like him. I like his fiscal policies ( to an extent) but socially he's lame.

This guy talks about doing doing away with earmarks...and then gets $300M to dredge the harbor.

That shit is important. We need to confidently get boats in and out to catch fish and crabs and ship them to STL without freezing them. In fact, the dredging should be done all the way to the airport to get them here quicker. This is time critical. The best we have out here is Gorton's Fish Sticks, so shut your yap, mister.

it is important. We need to deepen our harbor so that we can receive the newer, larger container ships and compete with Savannah.

You probably didn't live in St. Louis back during the days of the original Nantucket Cover seafood restaurant in the Central West End. That shit was good, fresh and EXPENSIVE. They flew everything in from the coast same day.

I know him from the county council days and I took away a different impression of him than Ibanez. I didn't see the cocky part of him.

To me, having the harbor dredged is a very appropriate use of federal funding. Charleston is a very significant container port and the commerce it facilitates benefits much more than just Charleston or SC. I don't consider that pork - rather, a legitmate function of government.

Now, building another bridge across it would be pork.

Exactly, dredging a harbor isn't pork. Infrastructure...right kalm? :kisswink:

Got here in March 2014. I read about a place that gets fresh seafood from the East Coast. I saved the article somewhere. :? There is also a supplier, Bob's Seafood, that gets fresh seafood to certain restaurants. I haven't figured out that distribution list yet though.
