kalm...did you really read through JSO's articles? They don't support Aslan's view. Radical Islam is growing in Indonesia. However, it is not radical Islam...it is simply Islam.
Aslan never actually addressed whether Islam is a peaceful religion. He skirted that issue by saying religions aren't violent, people are.
But that is not true. The Koran preaches violence...plain and simple.
The Koran is not the Bible ( a loose interpretation of events and stories). The Koran was written as the word of Allah...not some interpretation. To follow Islam properly, you must follow the word of Allah...and there is NO doubt that Islam does not tolerate other religions. It advocates violence on just about every level possible.
You can't argue that Islam is a religion of peace...it isn't towards anyone not Muslin. However, you can argue whether most Muslins care about following the details of their religion, and if they are actually practicing Islam.
Then most muslims are terrible at practicing their faith.
I realize Aslan didn't address that topic. Why would he? It's a pointless statement. That's the reason I brought it up.
It's like saying Christianity is a religion of peace. Or Buddhism is a religion of peace (see Sri Lanka).
Islam is a backwards, regressive religion, that tends toward violence. I just don't like how many americans including the media over-simplify the issues or get some facts blatantly wrong. Aslan pointed that out quite nicely.

You're still not getting it...or you, like Aslan, just ignore the underlying issue with Islam.
Islam IS a violent religion...it is written as such. All people who practice Islam and who are not violent towards the infidel simply need more practice at being better at Muslinism. The religion itself, if practiced correctly, is inherently violent. There is no getting around that.
So yeah, all people who practice Islam are not violent...but that is simply because they are failures at their religion.
The underlying problem with Islam, is that it needs Allah to send down his Son to rewrite the rules in order to preach forgiveness. Of course, that ain't happening for a variety of reasons.
We are saying we are not at war with Islam when in fact, we, the infidel, are indeed at war with Islam (unless, of course, you wish to convert...and then force everyone else to convert).
What we should actually be saying publicly is that we are not at war with people who are incorrectly practicing Islam, but that the non-Muslins of the world, including those incorrectly practicing Islam, are indeed at war with the psychopaths that are following the word of Allah in the name of Islam.
Notice one other item...Aslan completely avoided Maher's declaration that polls consistently indicate that a large majority of Muslins favor the harsh punishment, even death, of people who dare to criticize Islam. You can't say that, "people" are violent, but, "Islam" is not, when the people who are violent are saying they are in favor of violence against others simply because Islam, their religion,
tells them to be violent against others.
No way around it...Islam is a violent religion.
