Should the Big South Drop Back to Division II ?

Post by Aho Old Guy »

The UNCC Hwy 49ers are in OT with Chuck South :rofl:

CSU won it in OT. Will SoCon go to 1-5 vs D2 BIG SOUTH today

Looks like a no.

Citadel dominates G-Webb 37-14. At this point though I'm beginning to become less and less of a conference homer. Probably because VMI is already out of any title contention (not that we started with a chance), and it's dawned on me that we will suck eggs regardless of conference.

So the Big South has been running roughshod over the SoCon and people are singing their praises, but as soon as they run into a little rough patch against other competition, people are calling for the whole freaking conference to go back to D-II?!?

:roll:

Trying to figure this smack.

Since UNC-C is FBS transitional - they actually have more scholarships. They are young but stealing recruits from App State left and right.

You're a bad troll. The Big South has done more in the past two seasons than the SoCon has.

And UNCC is a team with a ton of young talent, just young. 2015 FBS team.

Wow. Thanks for the in-depth analysis. Bet in 5 years, they'll be better than your favorite FCS squad. They're landing some very good recruits and gaining a lot of interest from recruits who are on the bubble with Clemson, South Carolina, UNC, UGA.

Really? A 2019 Conference USA team UNC-Charlotte wont be better than 2019 Northern Iowa? UNI is a very good FCS team, no doubt about that. Maybe you guys just don't hear how much interest UNCC has already drawn from some pretty big time recruits in the Southeast, especially in NC/SC.

Maybe you haven't heard... UNI can't get cusa or mac style teams on our schedule because they know they would lose

That's not why. BTW, if UNI is so awesome, why wont they man up and MOVE UP to FBS, like Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, South Florida, Middle Tennessee, North Texas and other directional state-funded universities? Happy being big fish/small pond?

NIU, WMU and EMU didn't "move up". They were never in the FCS.

Not the point. They are there now. Many of the larger, state funded directional schools in that part of the country, or flagship state schools like North Dakota State, Montana, etc, are in FCS, whereas similar large, state funded schools in the rest of the country play in FBS. Why? FCS down here is for private schools or small public school. NDSU, Montana, NIU being in FCS.......is like if East Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia State, Central Florida were all in FCS. Doesn't make sense. FCS is for teams like Wofford, Furman, Coastal Carolina, Citadel, Samford, Charleston Southern, all small schools that are private, or way down the pecking order of public schools, not one of the primary 2-3 state schools.

Never understood why those big state funded schools in that part of the country has decided not to join the rest of the nation's large state institutions in FBS.

semantics.

Also, unlike most FCS schools UNI cares about it's other sports and not just football. It's said, many times, that no football move will be made if it negatively impacts basketball and volleyball.

UNI can't get MAC/CUSA schools to schedule them...they've tried, many times, and been told no

Do you really think UNI, SIU, Missouri State, etc... are all large universities? Look at the average endowment of a MAC school, average enrollment, average state subsidy, then look at UNI, SIU, MSU, NDSU, etc.. and tell me how comparable they are.

What you are describing is D2/D3 ball.

under grad enrollments

Montana 9,787 - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... ntana-2536" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Northern Iowa - 10,380 - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... s/uni-1890" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

NDSU - 11,948 - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... ate&state=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Montana State - 13,26 http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... ity&state=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

SIU - 13,351 - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... ale&state=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

EMU - 19-084 - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... ity&state=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

NIU - 15.814

wmu - 19,184

CMU - 20,354

Couple that with the FCS schools listed having 3, maybe 4 K, grad students on average where as the MAC schools have 8-12K on average

I should have rephrased that to

unlike most schools UNI won't sacrafice the success of it's other sports to make a football oriented move.

I don't think that statement is all that false. "most" might be an overstatement, but when it comes to scholarship football programs I would bet 85-90+% of them would move to a better football conference, even at the detriment to their MBB/WBB/volleyball/softball and baseball teams.

Clenz there are 125 I-A programs and 124 I-AA programs. If you were correct, there would be a giant disparity in those numbers.

BTW, I would say 85-90% qualifies as "most". Right now you'd have trouble convincing me it's even "more" (51%).
