Colorado School Protests

Post by kalm »

Nice to see some youngsters giving a shit.
ARVADA, Colo. (AP) — Hundreds of students walked out of classrooms around suburban Denver on Tuesday in protest over a conservative-led school board proposal to focus history education on topics that promote citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority, in a show of civil disobedience that the new standards would aim to downplay.

The youth protest in the state's second-largest school district follows a sick-out from teachers that shut down two high schools in the politically and economically diverse area that has become a key political battleground.

Yeah, citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority are bogus. What do they wish to be taught instead?

If the school board wasn't "conservative led" would this even be an issue? And why are those topic associated with "conservatism"? Aren't those American/civic topics?

Not hearing a whole lot of respect for authority these days from our conservative brothers. :coffee:

Guys. High school students. They don't walk out of class on principle. This was pushed by liberal teachers. Don't be naive.

Good point. It was probably also pushed by liberal parents. Still, not a bad lesson in civil disobedience and how the education system works for the kids.

Learning to question everything in life is just as important as "patriotism".

Awesome!

Finally, someone is protesting gObomba's actions in the Middle East!

Woo-hoo! Those Colorado people are true patriots for protesting our 1,500 boots on the ground in Iraq, our bombing of yet another country, our troops still being in Afghanistan, and our continued use of drones to invade Pakistani airspace to kill anyone and everyone within 100 yards of a bad guy.

And it is good that the teachers are also protesting gObomba's actions. :thumb:

Wait...they're actually protesting what? :suspicious:

:dunce:
These signatures have a 500 character limit?

What if I have more personalities than that?

The proposal comes from an elected board with three conservative members who took office in November. The other two board members were elected in 2011 and oppose the new plan
make sure materials "promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free-market system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights" and don't "encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law."

It's a tough one. I've been caffeine "limited" for several years now. By that, I mean I have one cup of half-caff each morning and that's it. Used to drink a lot of soda (man, I do love a fountain Coke and raspberry iced tea) but didn't like the heart issues that went with it. First two weeks were pretty rough... headaches, attention, etc...

Beer is the next one to go... or at least be cut back severely. That one will be tougher.

Oh, fuck off Porter Breath!

If a spicy single barrel bourbon, or an ice cold IPA strutted past.

Well, hopefully the protesters will get their way and we'll get the truth about the Civil War. You now...about how Lincoln was the the worst about violating the Constitution and abusing executive authority. That kind of thing.

Somehow I doubt we'll see that even though it really is true.

BTW, I think the School Board used the wrong language and should've had language about having a balanced treatment. But I would not be surprised at all if the "national framework for teaching history that supporters say encourages discussion and critical thinking" is actually a framework for teaching history from a "liberal" perspective and is focused on its own objectives in terms of promoting attitudes and behaviors.

At least they're questioning. Perhaps they'll be the ones who question military adventurism and the establishment when they come of age ? Or should we wait for those open minded and anti-colonial conservative youth to lead the way?

Education should be unbiased AND liberal, John. Balance on the other hand, can be very biased when it comes to history.
