The no vote was the best thing for Scotland right now. The political class they would have been immediately saddled with would have driven the country into the ground.

Sad day for the world.

Fear...it seems to be something most people can't overcome...and the one thing politicians prey upon. :ohno:

The argument that an independent Scotland might not be as wealthy or successful at first is preposterous, at least to me. When the colonies fought and won independence, they didn't become a super power. That didn't happen until 1945, 160+ years (i'm counting from 1783, not 1776). No one on the "yes" thought it would be easy or there wouldn't be some rough patches.

But, they voted and they want to remain in the Union. They got to choose and that's what's important.

The Scots can still claim a victory if the promise of a louder political voice comes true.
It's not easy to suddenly become totally dependent on yourself. I'm not sure they could have pulled it off and still maintain the standard of living that they currently have.

I don't see that at all. Like I said before, this idea that we should just retreat back to what we know, to people who look and act like we do, and stay in our little bubble and disengage from the rest of the world is not a trend we really want to see continue. It's going backwards really. Comparing the Scottish vote to our own independence was and always is silly - there are way too many things different about that than similar. We, as a species, do better when we are together working towards a common goal while overcoming, or even embracing, individual differences. If we all hide in our homes and hope the rest of the world doesn't interfere with us doing nothing, that's exactly what we'll end up achieving, nothing. It almost borders on nihilism and I can't think when that's ever been a good thing.

I dont think that one has to surrender their cultural identity to accomplish this. Say Scotland was independent today (in 2016) They're still sharing the island with the UK, still would be their closest neighbor, so are you saying that its impossible for independent nations to work together in that regard?

Mass Effect got it right.

A representative form of psuedo government to represent the entire planet. While still having individual nation-states.

Basically a space faring version of the United Nations with teeth.

It refers to the union of states, not the modern concept of multiculturalism.

Exactly...gannonfan has gone off the deep end.

One big world government...no remnants of different desires, different cultures. We must all be under one governance. People in New York City are to be forced into one governance with people from the farthest reaches of Siberia...because we will need to end individual or cultural differences in order to become one as a nation/world under one rule.

I had a professor that pointed out the difference between travel and tourism. People who travel want to go somewhere else to experience, and enjoy, the wonderful differences between people and their cultures. People who tour want to go somewhere else to experience what they experience at home.

In simpler terms, when you travel, do you look for the McDonald's, or do you try the native foods?

gannonfan apparently believes that being governed by your oppressive neighbor is a good thing. A Big Mac is a wonderful advancement for the human race.

BTW, what sound does a sheep make? :suspicious:

As I said, it refers to the union of states, not the modern concept of multiculturalism.

Multiculturalism in many large European cities, particularly in the UK, Sweden, France, Belgium and Holland means a foreign primitive culture aggressively displacing the advanced native culture. Those primitives don't give a damn about E Pluribus Unum.
