I fully support and independent Scotland. Just as much as I support and independent Kurdistan.
I quoted gObomba in an eralier thread...he said something earlier this year that was similar to, "people can't just vote to change a nation's borders."

Of course, our uninformed Dope In Charge was referring to Crimea.
He's a moron. Our country is founded on Independence and self-determination (allegedly).

Actually, their principal export is a little white ball and a little hole....

If Scotland votes for independence, Parliament will lose a chunk of Labour members (klam is right, for once), its economy will be in the crapper, and you will pay lots more for your Talisker, Laphroaig and Glenmorangie. :coffee: Late polls show "no" with a slim lead.

The economies will certainly take a hit, but Scotland contributes more money Per capita or a larger percentage of the GDP is from Scottish. It's one of those. Either way, tomorrow could be a historical day.

I'm hoping they don't vote to become independent. Frankly, I like when collections of people of differing backgrounds and viewpoints can come together and create something bigger than themselves. If we can't find ways to overcome the things that make us different and then only want to be with the close circle of people and communities that are like us, then it doesn't bode well to us being able to do the big things in the future. We wouldn't have gotten to the moon if we were just a loose collection of 50 states all seeking our own local interests. If Scotland, essentially, secedes, then both Scotland and the UK just get smaller as a result (literally, of course, but also conceptually) and they are the poorer for it, and we as a world as well. I hope the Scots think bigger than what a yes vote would be.

Well, they've been out of Ireland since Ireland became a republic in 1949. :coffee:

Someday we'll get to the point where we all come together, obviously not anytime in our lifetime. John Lennon had it right - "Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do". Harder than we think, though.

I hope Scotland votes "yes" for independence. Who are we, who fought a war against the British, to tell others they can't do the same non-violently.

It seems to me the Labour Party is heavily campaigning for the "no" vote as they'll lose considerable power in Parliament, not that they actually care what's best for the Scots.

Do English still do that thing where the local sheriff gets to bang each new bride on her wedding night before the groom gets to tap it? That's pretty messed up. I could see why Bill Wallace was so upset.

I vote YES. Fuck the redcoats and the queen!! And free N Ireland too!!!

Well, we also fought a bloody Civil War to keep a certain part of our country from having their own "independence" so history is a little cluttered with examples from both sides.

Well, Cameron is campaigning for the "no" vote too and he's a Tory, so it's not quite as clear cut as that. And Labour isn't going anywhere, they'll end up having a monopoly on power in Scotland after this so the politicians will win out no matter what the vote is.

THIS right here ^^^^^^

Scotland's current political class consists of some of the most abhorrent socialistic progressives that were ever shat out onto a society and you wouldnt wish these people on your worst enemies.

Scotland's political culture resembles nothing approaching what it once was before the biggest brain drain and diaspora in the history of the world occurred.

Scotland has 8.4% of the UK population, 32% of the land mass and in 2012-2013 generated 9.1% (£53.1bn) of UK tax revenues, and received 9.3% (£65.2bn) of UK spending back from Westminster. In 2012-2013, this amounted to a budget deficit of 8.3% of GDP, higher than the UK's overall budget deficit for the same period of 7.3% of GDP.[74] including a geographic share of North Sea oil.

Wikipedia
Scotland's gross domestic product (GDP) per head, including a geographic share of UK oil, is about £23,300 – some £2,300 higher than the UK figure, the SNP said. This would make Scotland the 14th richest country in the OECD, the party added.

Scotland's GDP per head is about £1,600 higher than France, £2,500 higher than Japan and £3,200 higher than Italy, the SNP said.

Brown is Scottish. He'd be leaving Parliament if Scotland goes on its own.

Don't know if this has been covered yet, but there are at least a hundred companies headquartered in Scotland who have threatened or promised to leave if they vote for independence. Gotta think that will scare a lot of people into voting 'no'.

I've heard of a few banks relocating but that's about it. I'd bet BAE Systems would have to do some thinking as I think they build ships for the UK in Scotland.

Or, on the contrary, it could piss off people to vote "Yes" if they think they are being told how to vote by the entrenched powers that be. Scots can be pretty defensive when it comes to national honor, as this whole vote thing shows.
