Single Most Important Issue

Post by CAA Flagship »

What do you think is the Single Most Important Issue that any POTUS should spend time on, on an almost daily basis?
What is #1 in your mind? This is not what is most important to you alone. It is what you think is important to the country. What issue affects the most people on a daily basis, that needs POTUS oversight and action?

Interesting.
Andy must have voted for Clinton.
It seems kalm did to, because I saw Clinton cheat on the golf course.

I think the biggest issue is government bringing about innovation and ensuring we have the talent to bring about the innovation. We need to start producing things and just hoping that oil prices will go up enough that manufacturing jobs will come back to the US is a losing strategy. When it's more lucrative to go into accounting and finance or work on Wall Street than it is to get advanced degrees in practical sciences or engineering, you've got to be able to recruit foreigners with good technical skills.

I know some will say the skills shortage is a myth and is all a plot to drive down wages, but I have yet to see a real look at the Tech job market that doesn't put evolutionary biologists and java programmers in the same category as engineers and physical scientists.

A close second would be health care. Our health care system is in deep trouble and anyone who criticizes Obama on the issue apparently just doesn't want people to have health insurance. Before we can even talk about how health care should be paid for we have to have more residency programs so we can train more doctors.

The governments #1 job is to protect it's citizens from foreign threats. The free market will sort out innovation and labor deficiencies. :dunce:

Fundamentally, yes, but we're so far along in terms of protecting ourselves from real foreign threats that it will be many years before anyone can credibly and systematically threaten us. And frankly, fostering a climate where innovation is encouraged and supported will go a long way to continuing to ensure our competitive advantage in the fields where we need to in order to continue to protect us. It's a win win really.

Besides, what is this free market that you speak of and where does it exist?

Well, I'm no libertarian, but in a free-market system we wouldn't make it more difficult to get foreign tech workers than foreign farm workers and hotel janitors. :coffee:

I thought the #1 priority of the government was to make sure that those who can't or won't support themselves would be provided with basic goods and services so that they have a reasonable quality of life and can preserve their dignity.

While I agree with what you are saying, this is just a subset to the issue of "employment".

You were doing well until you mase this insanely stupid comment. :dunce:

Yeah, as though Obama has the best plan and he can't be criticized.

There was an article in our local paper about a large chunk of illegal immigrants getting health care. Shall I send them your address so you can personally pay for their health care...or are you simply willing to let other people pay for your silly desires?

While an important issue that requires daily oversight, this is not the correct answer. You might as well say that providing clean water to the people is important.

Just imagine... for what its worth
If our government actually just stopped doing sh!t for 12 months
Actually DID NOTHING for 1 year

1) Collected no taxes
2) Passed no laws
3) funded nothing and nobody
4) Nobody in the Senate or House of any committee got paid

Just NOTHING

Of course clean water is important. But do you think the POTUS sits in on meetings almost every day to discuss clean water?

Could we live in a world where our Federal Government did a hell of a lot less..?
And when it spent more than it had - they didn't get paid

Imagine a Government that actually only DID what it had the funds to do - and nothing more

Outside of a crisis (natural disaster, terrorist attack, etc.), the government should absolutely be held to a budget. And pork should be cut out of every bill. This is all a no brainer.

But what is your answer to the question of "single most important issue"? Is it keeping to a budget?

Oh, and I'm not sure that the paycheck that each member of Congress receives is driving their actions or non-actions. That would be interesting to discuss in another thread.

Yes...
The most important thing they should be focused on is MONEY because NONE of it it theirs
It is the ONE THING that they TAKE from the citizens of this country

My Federal Government takes money out of my paycheck
Frankly its a staggering amount of my personal funds

And the glib nonchalance with which they spend it is alarming...

 They should ONLY DO what they have actual funds on hand to do - and NO MORE
