Worst Performance: Cal Poly 10, (FBS) New Mexico St. 28 - The Mustangs lose convincingly to a weak FBS squad they were actually favored to beat.

Most Surprising Result: Cal Poly 10, (FBS) New Mexico St. 28 - After falling behind by 18 with 8:51 to play, the Mustangs only attempt 3 passes. :?

Worst Performance: Incarnate Word 13, Sacramento St. 49 - They didn't give up a ton of yards, but the Cardinals did allow Garret Safron to throw 5 touchdown passes on just 25 attempts. They also lost their own starting quarterback, Trent Brittain, to a season-ending ankle injury.

Most Surprising Result: (#17)Sam Houston St. 51, Alabama St. 20 - The Bearkats dismantle the preseason SWAC favorites by racking up 685 yards of offense.

Worst Performance: South Dakota 13, (FBS) Oregon 62 - No MVFC team really had a bad performance, but I will make fun of the Coyotes for their 18-play, 9+ minute drive that scored zero points.

Most Surprising Result: (#2) North Dakota St. 34, (FBS) Iowa St. 14 - The Bison win their 5th. straight FBS game while the Cyclones lose to an FCS for the 2nd. consecutive year.

  • NConf Record: 5-4
    Overall: 5-4

    vs. FCS: 1-0
    Overall: 1-0

Best Performance: Eastern Kentucky 29, Robert Morris 10 - The Colonels win the rushing battle 407-28, but can't get a blowout thanks to turnovers & redzone issues.

Worst Performance: Austin Peay 0, (FBS) Memphis 63 - Governors display little competitiveness against an FBS coming off 6 straight losing seasons.

Most Surprising Result: Tennessee Tech 33, (NAIA) Kentucky Christian 7 - The newly hyped "QW" offense commits 3 turnovers and falls short of 350 yards against an inferior opponent.

Best Performance: Marist 7, Sacred Heart 28 - The Red Foxes get 4 takeaways against the team that led FCS in turnover margin last season, but can't find a running game.

Worst Performance: Drake 22, (NAIA) Grand View 45 - Drake falls behind 28-0 to a lower-division opponent before they can even get out of the first quarter.

Most Surprising Result: Drake 22, (NAIA) Grand View 45 - The supposedly improved Bulldogs get thumped by the defending NAIA champions, a team they narrowly lost to last year.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Is NAIA truly a "lower division" than the Pioneer League?
I suppose it depends how you look at it.
PFL teams have zero football scholarships while NAIA teams can give up to 24

About the only thing I could add to Venus' assessment of Incarnate Word's "performance" (or lack thereof) this past weekend is this jab at their student announcers:

"...incomplete was your training. Not ready for the burden were you...."

This was apparently their first time out, with NO football training to speak of other than being fans. Their repeated use of the same tired clichés (bringing the kitchen sink) showed a complete lack of creativity. Surprisingly, as Bible college students, they misapplied the one Bible reference they used (the Red Sea). They would immensely benefit from spending a spring semester as students in the coaching class most schools use to install their offense and defense in preparation for Spring Ball, as their knowledge of football strategy was woefully lacking. ("I'd just chuck it.") Once, they even advocated running play action AFTER THE ROUT HAD ALREADY BEEN LAID ON. Who the heck is going to bite on play action when it's obvious to everyone in the stands and on TV that to have ANY hope at all, you have to throw?

That's not to say that they were horrible homers. They clearly liked their team, and were eternally optimistic for a turnaround that never came, but they NEVER claimed that Sac State cheated, as at least one set of opposing announcers falsely claimed last season. UIW's guys just need training in football theory and a mentor in honing their craft. That's all.

Get some training, guys....

Not much. The Pioneer champ is usually better than the NAIA one, but the PFL does seem weaker than it was a few years ago.

Patriot League

VMI 38-42 BUCK
COLG 10-30 BALL
SFPA 23-52 FORD
HC 13-14 ALB
WAG 21-3 GTOWN

  • NConf Record: 2-3
    Overall: 2-3

    vs. FCS: 2-2
    Overall: 2-2

Best Performance: (#11) Fordham 52, St. Francis (PA) 23 - Michael Nebrich didn't do a whole lot, but he didn't need to thanks to stout pass defense and 181 yards rushing from Chase Edmonds.

Worst Performance: Georgetown 3, Wagner 21 - The Hoyas had 7 different runners carry the ball against a weak Seahawk squad, but none of them could manage more than 10 yards.

Most Surprising Result: Georgetown 3, Wagner 21 - With this type of performance against arguably the worst team on their schedule, Georgetown may have to wait until next year to get program win #500.

NEC

SFPA 23-52 FORD
DUQ 28-38 BUFF
EKU 29-10 RMU
WAG 21-3 GTOWN
BRY 13-7 SBU
CCSU 31-27 TOW
MARIST 7-28 SACHRT

  • NConf Record: 4-3
    Overall: 4-3

    vs. FCS: 4-2
    Overall: 4-2

Best Performance: Central Connecticut St. 31, (#13) Towson 27 - Rob Holloman puts up 209 total yards & 2 rushing touchdowns while Nick Sangiacomo throws for 273 and 2 TDs on just 28 attempts in an impressive offensive performance.

Worst Performance: Robert Morris 10, Eastern Kentucky 29 - Mistakes by the Colonels prevented this from being much uglier—the Colonials were outgained 624-250.

Most Surprising Result: Central Connecticut St. 31, (#13) Towson 27 - The Blue Devils make The Sports Network's pick of them as the worst team in the NEC look even more puzzling.

CAA

NOVA 26-27 SYR (2OT)
HC 13-14 ALB
BRY 13-7 SBU
UNH 20-54 TOL
NFOLK 6-10 MAINE

MHEAD 10-55 RICH
W&M 9-34 VT
JMU 7-52 MD
ELON 13-52 DUKE

  • NConf Record: 3-8
    Overall: 3-8

    vs. FCS: 3-2
    Overall: 3-2

Best Performance: (#12) Villanova 26, (FBS) Syracuse 27 (2OT) - An insane 34 carries by Villanova's quarterback are squandered thanks to what was basically a missed extra point.

Worst Performance: Stony Brook 7, Bryant 13 - Marcus Coker's suspension really hurts the Seawolves as they can only manage 186 yards of total offense against an unimpressive opponent.

Most Surprising Result: (#13) Towson 27, Central Connecticut St. 31 - It was already clear Towson's lofty ranking was breathing last year's fumes, but I thought they had enough momentum to at least get to the gas station. :?

Big South

DSU 21-52 MONM
LIB 29-56 UNC
GWEBB 3-13 FUR
CCU 31-16 CIT
point 9-61 CHSO
PRESBY 3-55 NIU

  • NConf Record: 3-3
    Overall: 3-3

    vs. FCS: 2-1
    Overall: 2-1

Best Performance: (#7) Coastal Carolina 31, The Citadel 16 - The Chants struggle against the option, but they compensate by outpassing the Bulldogs 263-19.

Worst Performance: Gardner-Webb 3, (#21) Furman 13 - Bulldogs avoid committing a penalty, but can't even get 200 yards of offense.

Most Surprising Result: Monmouth 52, Delaware St. 21 - Hawks decimate an opponent they were only slightly favored to beat.

MEAC

DSU 21-52 MONM
MORG 28-31 EMU
HOW 0-41 AKR
HAMP 28-41 ODU
NFOLK 6-10 MAINE

NCCEN 7-52 ECU
SCSU 63-0 ben
SAV 7-61 MTSU
FAMU 17-22 JSU
BCU 14-12 FIU

  • NConf Record: 3-8
    Overall: 3-8

    vs. FCS: 1-3
    Overall: 1-3

Best Performance: (#22) Bethune-Cookman 14, (FBS) Florida International 12 - It wasn't as convincing, but the Wildcats beat the Golden Panthers again thanks to smothering defense.

Worst Performance: Delaware St. 21, Monmouth 52 - Losing yardage 553-187 to Monmouth is not a promising sign for the 2014 Hornets.

Most Surprising Result: (#22) Bethune-Cookman 14, (FBS) Florida International 12 - When scheduling games, FIU's favorite phrase is apparently "Yes sir, may I have another!?" :?

SoCon

VMI 38-42 BUCK
WCU 31-36 USF
GWEBB 3-13 FUR
WOFF 19-38 GT
CCU 31-16 CIT
rein 42-45 MER
SAM 14-48 TCU
UTC 16-20 CMU

  • NConf Record: 2-6
    Overall: 2-6

    vs. FCS*: 1-2
    Overall: 1-2

Best Performance: (#14) Tennessee-Chattanooga 16, (FBS) Central Michigan 20 - 3 second-half interceptions by QB Jacob Huesman cause the Mocs to blow a 16-0 lead against a decent MAC team.

Worst Performance: Mercer 45, (NAIA) Reinhardt 42 - It's a major concern that the Bears didn't beat the NAIA Eagles by any more than they did last season.

Most Surprising Result: Western Carolina 31, (FBS) South Florida 36 - Troy Mitchell completes 46 passes for 374 yards as the Catamounts nearly hand USF another humiliating FCS loss

How Towson's loss isn't the worst preformanance, I'll never understand.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

Bryant had a better record than CCSU last season and beat them head to head, therefore I would agree with you Andy. WCB

WTF happened to Towson?

An epic no-show by the players.

It was 50/50. I mainly went with that one because Towson/CCSU already had 3 other mentions. Bryant was also picked lower than CCSU in the NEC preseason poll.

Ivy League

(no games)

SWAC

PVAMU 35-37 TXSO
UAPB 0-65 TXST
GRAM 27-42 LAM
SU 6-45 ULL
ALST 20-51 SHSU
NCAT 47-13 AAMU (in Orlando, FL)
ufaith 7-32 MVSU
FAMU 17-22 JSU
vul 7-55 ALCORN

  • NConf Record: 3-5
    Overall: 3-5

    vs. FCS: 1-3
    Overall: 1-3

Best Performance: Jackson St. 22, Florida A&M 17 - Tigers beat FAMU for the first time since 1996 with a 49-yard hail-mary catch by DeSean McKenzie as time expired.

Worst Performance: Alabama A&M 13, North Carolina A&T 47 - The Bulldogs allow 307 rushing yards and 3 total touchdowns of at least 59 yards (including a kick return) to an Aggie team that only returned 9 starters.

Most Surprising Result: Alabama St. 20, (#17) Sam Houston St. 51 - If the SWAC wants the FCS community to keep taking them seriously, their best teams can't get massacred by opponents that aren't even in the top 10.

Independents

Charlotte is the only team that even could be listed as an FCS Indy, but they are now an FBS transitional so Independents will cease to be covered here this season.
