Sorry Grizo. I've missed you being around, and my separation anxiety got the best of me.

Interesting read, dated 7/22/14. Clearly written by a Tiger fanboi, but I wonder if he'd be as adamant about Rory's chances given this weekend?
With his win at the British Open, 25-year-old Rory McIlroy joined Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win three different legs of the Grand Slam before turning 26. This impressive feat brought out the inevitable Rory/Tiger comparisons, with questions such as “can Rory get to Tiger’s 14 majors” or “is Rory about to go on a major championship run like Tiger in 2000?” being thrown around.

Stop. Please. Stop, stop, stop. Rory McIlroy isn’t Tiger Woods. Rory McIlroy isn’t going to be Tiger Woods. Maybe — maybe — he’ll win 14 majors one day, but the odds are so stacked against him that it’s not even worth discussing unless he gets halfway there. Here’s what Rory would have to do to keep at Tiger’s Grand Slam pace: win the next three majors he plays. The odds of him doing that are equivalent to 2014 Tiger Woods doing the same thing. Zippy.

Chris Chase is one of the worst POS's of all time. His stuff is never good, so I just stopped reading after that. ;) Regardless of the article, Rory looked really good yesterday. The thing about Tiger was that he was almost always in the lead on Sunday. The one exception was when he beat Bob May at this same PGA course 14 years ago. This Rory comeback, though, against 3 of the top 15 ranked golfers in the world was impressive. He was in the fairway pretty much every time and he out-drove the entire field almost every time. That kind of power and accuracy is unheard of in most golf tournaments. His irons never missed either. If he had been putting like he did all week, he might have finished at 20 under par.

Now, the tough part for Rory is that professional golf has improved immensely in the past 20 years. Tiger brought so much interest in golf, and most of these young golfers now idolized Tiger. There are so many more contenders at every single major than there used to be. Sure, Tiger had Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson, but there are about 15-20 of those caliber players now, and Phil is still looking as good as he ever was. The high level of competition is what has been most impressive for Rory in these major wins. Now that he's single again, he's looking like he did when he first came on the scene.

The first big impression I had of McIlroy was attending the 2009 PGA in Minnesota. He was a 20 year old kid, and I had seen him on TV before. We moved around the course that day and would sit at a hole for 7-8 groups to go by. On one hole we sat around 300 yards out along a fairway. During the time we sat there, several had long drives, including Tiger Woods. McIlroy was one of them, a floppy haired youngster walking out to the same area Tiger hit is drive.

Rory is not Tiger, and he is not Jack either. It will be interesting to see how his career develops.

Good post.

IMHO, Rory has a swing that creates better control off the tee and perhaps less stress on the body than Tiger did in his prime (especially after Tiger dumped Harmon as his swing coach). Golf is a game of balance, and Rory has amazing balance for as powerful as he is.

Similar to Jack, Tiger's strengths were his length, his ability to recover, and to make timely puts. Rory has the length, with more accuracy (just my gut feeling, haven't looked at accuracy stats for comparison), and putts it equally as well. He's also absolutely run away with a couple of majors.

I don't think it's inappropriate to have this discussion in the least.

I'm no Tiger fan, but this EXACT same argument was used to explain why Tiger would never get close to Jack's records...how golf had improved immensely, equipment had improved immensely, how Jack only had Arnie and Gary & Tom Watson & Johnny Miller to contend with, yada yada yada.

At the end of the day, it'll come down to two things:

a) Will Rory's body hold up (obviously we have the answer about Tiger)
b) Will Rory's "drive" to accomplish the feat hold up when he's filthy stinking rich at age 35.

The only thing that is inappropriate is the thread title. Tiger doesn't have the record, and the way he is playing right now he won't win another major.

I suspect that Tiger will improve, and might even win another major, but it's going to be really tough for him to catch Jack with the level of competition out there now.

Last person to win back to back majors died as a direct result.

The golf swing is the most challenging motion in sports. It's not simple like licking other men…or running. :coffee:

FYI…it was 4.5 miles of interval in one hour.

I'm semi-fat, old, out of shape, and slow, but at least I'm in a 100 mile August challenge instead of waking up after passing out over an oak barrel in bum fucked Up-state Sleepy Hollow. :tothehand:

Perhaps Payne Stewart, who didn't win back to back?
