I have a friend who does comedy. He says that the reason there is a prevalence of sex jokes and shock humor today is that any joke based on ethnic stereotype, no matter how innocuous, is going to cause controversy. Someone is going to call you out, urge that people boycott you, or demand that you be fired. So the ethnic stereotype is off the table (unless you are making fun of your own). So comedians have less material to work with today.
