Spent a crapload of time in and around Baltimore. Other than inner harbor and sharing a few with the Colonel, I was unimpressed. Yes, I've been around the state...it's beautiful, but in MD, I've been shot at, almost struck by lightning, and kicked by Police for falling asleep at BWI (along with two other businessmen stuck overnight on a layover...all wearing suits...I was the youngest. Their Super. said a complaint "wouldn't go anywhere".). Tennesseans are the most hospitable folks in our country...and MD has nothing to compare to Nashville and Beale St.

You lost me at Beale street. That place and pretty much all of Memphis is the pits, except for the obvious good food joints. Beale street is a tourist trap just like Bourbon Street.

It's touristy, agreed, but the food joints are good (usually eat at Blues City Cafe...catfish, of course)...twice stumbled across top name bands playing at the Daisy Theater...tickets $12... ) Lotta depth and heritage on Beale St. Street performers aside, other than the French Quarter, where else can you wander through the streets, beer in hand, listening to the best blues music in the U.S.?

Did you ever get more than 30 miles from I-95 during your time in Maryland? That is sort of the make or break for opinions of the state, unless you really enjoy sprawl and congestion.

If you're ever there again, try Garrett County in the west or Ocean City/Assateague National Seashore just outside of peak season (April-early May or mid-Sep-Oct). Or even a day on the Bay leaving from Annapolis or St Michaels.

Wife and I did our first babymoon (ie I get blasted and my wife drives and makes the difficult decisions) in St. Michael. Great little town with a winery, brewery, distillery, great restaurants, etc. been meaning to go back

I went to a wedding on St.Michaels. Great town. Wedding was at the same place that Wedding Crashers was filmed. It still smelled of Rachael McAdams.

And for the record. I love living in Maryland. The taxes suck, bad. But we got clean highways and I work for a engineering firm that does business predominantly for state and local goverment. So, meh. I moved around ALOT as a kid. MD, NJ, COLO, MD. 8 schools before high school. I like it here and want my girls to stay put.

Mountains, farms, cities, the bay, the ocean, four seasons. I'm here to stay.

Andy is right though, it's a pretty cool state. We have a little bit of everything, including: high crime (B'more), awful traffic (everywhere), pollution (not so much), and humidity (anything from NYC to Miami has it).

I dunno about the blues music, but Savannah, Ga is a contender. I've never been to New Orleans so i'm not sure. Tennessee is an interesting state. There's some "culture" if you're in the mountains. Dollywood/Pigeon Forge is their South of the Border and should be avoided.

Hell, that happens everywhere. In Sussex County, DE, the Methodists run everything, and there's a real pecking order among the local Methodist churches. When I tell them I'm an Episcopalian, it generally shuts them up.

Davidson County, TN went nearly 60% for Obama in '08, an island of liberalism. Seems like you'd have fit in there just fine.
