But KAL 007 was under a different time and circumstances.

But what would Putin possibly have to gain by shooting down a civilian jumbo jet? Alleged Russian actions in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine by advisors and Spetsnaz, and the arming of the rebels, had fallen off of front page worldwide news news lately. This puts it back on front page news around the world and will make it that much harder for Russia to achieve it goals of annexing eastern Ukraine. With lots of western Europeans and Americans on that plane, there is likely to be much less appeasement among Western Europe towards Russia. And who knows, maybe Obama, after being asked by Ukraine for arms, will give them more than MREs.

And what would the rebels have to gain by intentionally shooting it down? Nothing but worldwide condemnation, making it that much harder to achieve their separatist goals in Donetsk..
agreed. No good would come from downing a civilian plane.

We have yet to explore the possibility of aliens.

I heard/saw a report that our military was watching and is analyzing data. Report said that they will be able to tell us what kind of missile it was and where it was launched from. On the what kind of missile it was something about the "heat signature."

Course it was on Fox News so I guess we have to dismiss it. Jennifer Griffin.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

CNN originally reported that... but, now they've backtracked. No Americans confirmed.

So I pick Poland

:kisswink: But I'll take any one of the "stans" as a second option
We haven't carpet bombed anyone since the 1st Gulf War, and that was relatively small scale.

True. I was editing at 8:36, the exact same time as your post, to say since Gulf War I.

Afghanistan in 01' was even smaller scale- from what I read was never more than a handful of bombers at a time.

Seeing the B-52 contrails circling made the Taliban shit themselves before the bombs even rained on them, and was also very therapeutic for the nation to see while the embers at the WTC were still smoking.

I'm surprised you don't remember all of that. It was only 12 and a half years ago.

That wasn't Iraq. Was Afghanistan. And that wasn't carpet bombing. Those bombs were right on target. Was a tragic mistaken identity/friendly fire incident:

Also, lots of conclusions being jumped to about Russia obviously providing the separatists with AA weapons.

They easily could have the weapons from Ukrainian bases they've seized.

A few bombers here. A few bombers there. I initially stated "truly carpet bombed" when I should have wrote "large scale carpet bombed"- dozens of bombers at a time. My bad.

Just to be very correct, carpet bombing uses "dumb" or unguided bombs...last really used in Gulf War I...

In Afghanistan, even 12 years ago, B-52s were dropping guided munitions...not a perfect solution, but much less collateral damage...

yeah I know all about it... there were dozens of examples of "precision" bombing killing our allies and our own troops - I just like to bring them up when ditto heads talk about American "precision" bombing whilst simultaneously denying that we were indeed also carpet bombing...
