Obviously there should be some kind of response, but do you really want an all-out war between two countries with enough nukes to destroy the solar system?
Where did anyone suggest that we engage in war with Russia?

For starters
1) if Obama actually listens to or uses the UN that would be 100% the opposite of what Bush did
2) If he actually uses intelligence to determine the culprit that would be 100% the opposite as well
3) If he directly engages the guilty country that too would be 100% the opposite

A real president would immediately declare war on "something"
and then start bombing a completely unrelated country...

Engages the guilty country? What does that mean? There are only so many potential culprits here. Choose a scenario for each and tell me what "engages" means.

We do nothing for 2 reasons:

1. Its none of our business
2. This country doesnt have the balls to fight a real war with Russia and we sure as hell dont have a President that can lead fighting men, he cant even make a 12ft jumpshot with any regularity.

Absolutely not. But it should be more than the sanctions issued yesterday before this. I hope. Don't you?

Engages (in recent history) means carpet bombing a completely unrelated nation...
So I pick Poland

The Russians/Soviets have a history of doing just that.
But KAL 007 was under a different time and circumstances.

But what would Putin possibly have to gain by shooting down a civilian jumbo jet? Alleged Russian actions in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine by advisors and Spetsnaz, and the arming of the rebels, had fallen off of front page worldwide news news lately. This puts it back on front page news around the world and will make it that much harder for Russia to achieve it goals of annexing eastern Ukraine. With lots of western Europeans and Americans on that plane, there is likely to be much less appeasement among Western Europe towards Russia. And who knows, maybe Obama, after being asked by Ukraine for arms, will give them more than MREs.

And what would the rebels have to gain by intentionally shooting it down? Nothing but worldwide condemnation, making it that much harder to achieve their separatist goals in Donetsk..

agreed. No good would come from downing a civilian plane.

Who said it's our responsibility? 24 American and 80 children, think of the children, were just murdered. We do nothing? It's looking like wha-hoo separatists fucked up badly. They will go away like the Somali pirates the ruskies captured years ago. But to quote a Married with Children episode "If you give a monkey a gun and it shoots/kills someone, you don't blame the monkey!"

We shouldn't get involved militarily, but we could start by giving/selling at a discount some of our older military hardware to Ukraine. They asked the US for arms earlier this year, and Obama gave them MRE's.

REAL economic sanctions as opposed to ones the ones that Obama leveled a few months ago against a handful of individuals that were a joke and that the Russians laugh at:
