My posts in this thread are all on topic. Some attention spans may be too short to absorb them but they are on topic. The studies referenced in the article linked at the start are crap. They really are.

You're probably right about the extent to which people care about the problem, but the fact that we have a system where our Universities are considered our wellspring of knowledge, crap like this gets put out, then it gets perceived as having credibility because of false perceptions about the peer review process IS a huge problem. It affects everything.

There's bad behavior due to narcissism and there's bad behavior related to poor impulse control. IMO 2 different things.

I think here is too. But the bottom line point was about ethics. The paper starts off by saying there are reasons to believe lower class people would behave less ethically and reasons to think upper class people would behave less ethically. They are different reasons. But the bottom line is to establish the idea that upper class people behave less ethically.

I think we discussed that study on this board quite some time back. Maybe like a year ago.

I can't even remember if I looked up the actual study to evaluate it but I think I'll try. Needless to say I'm pretty skeptical and suspect that what we have here is an egalitarian that's not interested in objective assessment but is instead interested in showing how the "rich" are greedy, self centered, etc.

To me it kind of flies in the face of things we hear and generally accept to be true all the time. One example is the generally accepted association between poverty and "personal" face to face crime where people do things like beat people up to take their money, etc. We're blaming "poverty" as "causing" crime all the time.

Another thing is that I have no doubt that cheating to take advantage of public programs for the poor is rampant. Remember this:

That's the real world. Wasn't rich people doing that.

The paper would not have been published if the peer review process was a serious quality control mechanism because the conclusion as stated by the opening sentence of the abstract is not substantiated by the studies described.

Yes but the point of the article the initial post referenced as well as the paper the article described was the claim that upper class people are less ethical than lower class people. Narcism was postulated as a factor in that. But the point was that wealthy people are less ethical.

BTW, I think JSO is basically correct here. The way they measure income is flawed. Has it occurred to them that a lot of rich folks may not be easy to identify in public?

I have a millionaire uncle who would laugh in your face if you tried to sell him a $1500 suit or a $50,000 car. I would think people who flaunt their wealth are in many cases narcissistic. The more thrifty wealthy people probably wouldn't be as much so.

Agreed. My 81 year old mom grew during the depression. She has done quite well for herself but is tight as hell with her money. She also thinks the economy is fantastic right now because of her investments....
