Why Teenagers may be more Conservative...

This is a pretty interesting article. I like to listen to the crap that comes out of Rush's mouth, and he was talking about this yesterday.
But think about people who were born in 1998, the youngest eligible voters in the next presidential election. They are too young to remember much about the Bush years or the excitement surrounding the first Obama presidential campaign. They instead are coming of age with a Democratic president who often seems unable to fix the world’s problems.

I just wonder how many of the kids that age know anything of the worlds problems? Most that I know don't know anything past the various cell phone models available or what's happening in the "X-box" world.

I find it interesting. I was born in 1983, which is the 2nd year of the Millenial Generation but also considered Generation 9/11 because we were in between 10-20 yrs old at that time. I remember Clintons election, Lewinsky, Rwanda, the 2000 election, the bombings of Oklahoma, the USS Cole, the embassies, 9/11, all that BS with Bush, and so forth. I think a major reason why I remain unaffiliated but lean left on social issues is because the Right seems to lack compassion. They seem to be stuck in some 1940s mentality that doesn't go over well these days. Fiscally, the right makes a lot of sense. We have a spending problem. Plain and simple. Maintain current levels of revenue, reduce spending and realize the savings. However, there are good and bad on both sides of the aisle. I feel there's room for a major 3rd Party, something has to be better than the lack of leadership and piss poor governance we are all witnessing today. Obama is an arrogant prick who, I feel, is in way over his head. The Republicans have been hi-jacked by an extremist group (fucking Tea partiers). The ACA and Obama are doing a good job of showing how bad it is, the Republicans should be able to swoop in with ideas for augmenting it, instead of voting on it's repeal for the 43rd time. Anyway, all I'm trying to say is...squirrel.

End...Rant.

I think the next election cycle will be more influential to the age group the article is referencing. Right now, most can't critically interpret the effect politics has on their lives; they may have a good understanding of it, but their minds can't make all the connections that their 18-26 year old selves (the next Presidential election cycle) will be able to. In those years, they'll have a much better understanding of how politics shapes their world locally, nationally, and globally. For most, they'll also feel it firsthand instead of simply witnessing the effects of politics through the eyes of the caretakers they're currently dependent on.

FWIW, my kids are 18 and 16 and both say it's a pretty close split at their schools between libs and cons with a slight edge to libs. Perhaps that's because both attend(ed) Catholic high schools and Catholics are one of the most evenly split groups in the country.

Here is some data from Pew. IMO, a better word for millenials than conservative is pragmatic.

It's possible to look at the data and claim millenials are pretty liberal but you have to understand there is a difference between being liberal and being pragmatic on certain issues. There is a difference between not wanting all abortions to be illegal and being a "anyone-who-wants-any-restrictions-on-abortions-is-a-woman-hating-jerk-barefoot-pregnant-in-kitchen-blah-blah-blah" nincompoop. Same deal with immigration. It's one thing to be pragmatic about the issue and another to think multiculturalism is the greatest blessing ever bestowed on America and anyone who has any concerns is just a xenophobic bigot.

I think there's some truth to what that article says about events in early life molding people's world views. I've read before that the generation that came of age in the Civil War was generally not as religious, more cynical and rational than those from the Romantic period that was before. We could have the similar situation created by the economic crisis.

Shut up! It's all or nothing! Either a Full repeal of the ACA or Full implementation. Either amnesty for illegal immigrants or Deportation of them all! There is no room for the middle ground. No room for compromise.

I have said many times that the biggest enemy of the ACA would be full implementation without delay

Yep. It's cyclical and each generation's world view is strongly shaped by what their parents were experiencing during their upbringing. Kids born into a crisis period will naturally be more cynical.

The accompanying graphic suggests that your views are most strongly affected by what's happening in your world during the ages of 14-24. Holds true for me so far.
