Most Beloved Politician in America?

THE custom here is for a mayor’s portrait to be hung in the City Council chamber only after he leaves office. But in 2007, folks got tired of waiting for Joe Riley to make his exit, and he was put on the wall while still on the job. He’d been running Charleston for more than 31 years.

It’s almost 39 at this point: a period long enough that he can’t remember the color of his hair, now white, when he first took office, in December 1975.
Loved? He's definitely done a lot of good but hmmmm...interesting piece.

You have to admit, he did a lot of good for the city. Do you even remember King St. above Calhoun being as safe and profitable as it is now? He brought in Greenberg, that was a good guy. :thumb:

There was a LOT of shady shit going on with Riley.

As for King and Calhoun, the answer is yes. It was just as safe all the way up to Spring Street 30 years ago as it is now. The books are just cooked.

As for the gentrification and improvement of that area, that would have happened without any help from Riley. In fact, it is arguable that had he done nothing it would have happened faster.

I don't know. I remember King and Meeting street being sketchy as hell and nothing worth going pass maybe Morris St. It's taken a lot of time, but I think a bad trend is a lot of chains are coming into the city.

One of the funniest things was the naming of the stadium, the Joesph "Don't Name It after Me" Riley Stadium.

Believe me..

Having worked for the city for 17 years and having seen exactly how Riley operates

I could tell you stories all day long

his affinity for charisma OVER expertise and judgment is precisely why Chief Rusty rose to the level he was at and directly contributed to the Sofa Super Store debacle - yes I went there

he lucked out with Reuben - who could have just as easily created equally bad situations (because his judgment was off in the later years as well). if Reuben had been white he would not have lasted 1 year behaving the way he did.

A family friend is a battalion chief that responded to the S3. I've heard a lot. I have my own beef with him.

I'm not defending him, per se. I don't care.

He IS beloved by a lot of people

But go out to James ISland and Johns Island and he is equally hated

Why go there? Go to any bar on the peninsula. There's a new term you should know about: Joehibition.

Riley does not now nor has he EVER cared one whit about the college crowd in Charleston, because they are all "From Off" and do not vote in Charleston.

Oh, no. It's not the college crowd. It's the bar and restaurant owners that he's pissed off. He wants to move closing time to midnight.

99.9% of them are "from off" also

Riley does what his South of Broad and French Quarter consitutents want, and in return for his pliability they agree not to put up too much of a fight over the property taxes they pay

they don't like the noise and the revving engines after midnight on the Battery

so poof!

new city ordinance
