Caroline Sparks' death comes after two other incidents in recent months involving young children shooting others. In early April, a 4-year-old boy in Tennessee shot and killed a 48-year-old woman, and just days later, 6-year-old Brandon Holt was killed in New Jersey after being shot in the head by his 4-year-old playmate.![]()
Not quite the way you depicted it, but you're learning.

leaves house

Grandma says: It was her time to go
The end....

...in a country of 314 million people...

...confirming the number of accidental gun deaths in America is infinitesimal.
A testament to the success of the second amendment and the good judgement of gun owners.

and I grew up in a gun culture.... and when I say gun culture... I mean that during hunting season everybody was open carry... as a high school senior I actually took my rifle to school during deer season so I could go straight to the deer stand after school rather than home first. The agriculture teacher would lock it in the gun locker in his office... or, you could leave it in the parking lot in your truck.
But that said, I know of nobody who I grew up with, nor did I know any parent who would think that a 5 year old should have a gun- ever. The earliest we started shooting was around 10-11 years old and that was with a bb gun. I had my first shotgun at age 12 and was never allowed to use it absent adult supervision until I was about 15 (which of course is the same age I was allowed unsupervised possession of another deadly weapon... my 78 Oldsmobile)
so your story has a heck of a lot more to do with stupid ignorant parenting than it does with guns... maybe even more to do with the bible (

CID1990 and I must have attended the same high school. And never once did anyone brandish anything or cause any problem in my years there.

A Kentucky mother stepped outside of her home just for a few minutes, but it was long enough for her 5-year-old son to accidentally shoot and kill his 2-year-old sister with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday, state officials said.
Riddle said she is devastated, but comforted knowing that her granddaughter is in a better place.
"It was God's will. It was her time to go, I guess," she told WLEX. "I just know she's in heaven right now and I know she's in good hands with the Lord."

I am truly curious what people use for home defense.
The semi-trolling came in response to a post by one of my fraternity brothers on facebook - who claimed that a lot of innocent people are going to die because CA banned magazine capacity to 10 rounds beginning July 1st.
I challenged him to show how this is going to kill lots of innocent people. It was entertaining

The mag capacity argument has been going on forever... I disagree with mag limits but I dont see mag limits costing lives in home protection situations... at least not until the civil war or zombie apocalypse. The bottom line is that you need to crime proof your house first. Interior locks with no thumb latches, security windows, etc
Then you'll hear an intruder before he gets in and can casually go upstairs and get your 5 shot .38 Smith airweight revolver and give him a hearty welcome
I used to do this for CPD- do walkthroughs of peoples' houses and tell them where their vulnerabilities were, what they needed to fix. There is a lot people can do to keep people out of their houses, but once somebody gets inside, you had either better have a gun or be very talented and charismatic at negotiation

That was my basic argument - for home defense, Magazine capacity doesn't mean much (besides, if you really want to have more firepower, you can legally own multiple guns, etc).
One woman argued that she needed the ability to spray bullets everywhere because she wasn't the best shot, especially in a low light situation. I told her she likely would be killing her kids, not a robber.
Between my security doors (#1 thing you can do to protect your house) and my dogs, I feel very secure in my house.

Re: Serious question for gun owners RE: Home defense
I disagree with mag limits, but for a different reason: they're useless. If I wanted to go on a shooting spree, I could easily carry 15 10 round magazines for my 9mm and go through all 15 magazines--accurately, I might add--in under 3 minutes. 5 magazines every 60 seconds. Changing magazines in a rapid fire situation is about a 3-second evolution, at worst. Having magazine capacities of 19 rounds (which is what came with my 9mm) only saves me about 20 seconds.dbackjon wrote:CID1990 wrote:I saw thus thread as a troll from the first post

It's not like I'm choosing between a 10-round mag and a drum magazine...although I MUST admit I do have a couple 30 round mags for my 9mm and they're pretty fucking cool to blow through...

Best known home defense is to be best known as a BAMF. Even here in the land of unrestricted ownership and carry, being a BAMF trumps all.

Like this is a serious postdbackjon wrote:In what order what type of gun would you rank your preference/effectiveness for home defense?
i.e. handgun, rifle, shotgun, etc. Any preference on magazine size? Where would you keep it if:
1) In bed
2) Eating dinner
3) Watching TV
4) Playing with the kids.
Thanks in advance.
I will play along.
My home in eastern MT has 7 handguns staged at various locations throughout the home. All of them are loaded and extra mags and ammo are near each location. 5 of them are revolvers. The 2 semi autos are near doors so I can shoot stuff outside.
The home in central MT has 3 revolvers and 2 shotguns
The home in Western MT has 5 revolvers 7 semi autos, 3 shotguns and more than 3 semi auto rifles. I have more than 25k rounds of ammo for the rifles, dozens of cases of shotgun shells and nearing 10k in handgun ammo.
Most of the bedrooms have a shotgun and a revolver the only gun safe I have is in Western MT but most of the guns are easily accessible and I don't worry about kids getting them. My son knows not to fu* k around with them and how to safely operate them. Other peoples kids are on their own, they shouldn't fu* k with other people stuff and if they do I guess it was God calling them home.
These are the only guns That I will talk about, the rest of them.........GFY they are not on record and as far as you are concerned I don't have any more guns.

Re: Serious question for gun owners RE: Home defense
EC(b) pussies. In MT we got our rifles as a coming-of-age present at 13, attended Hunters Safety course, and were set loose upon the world. And yes, in HS we REGULARLY brought loaded rifles to school during hunting season...knew several people who went hunting up Rattlesnake or Pattee Canyon on their lunch hour, bagged a deer, and would come back to school with the dressed out deer strapped over the hood. LOTS of loaded weapons in the parking lot on any given day, and nary a single school shooting...hmmm...wonder why?CID1990 wrote:Regardless of what people think about gunsChizzang wrote:
