Attendance problem in football?

Post by grizzaholic »

I know this article is on Michigan...but I can see it with many teams in the FCS...I am sure Delaware fans can relate.

Good article and deserves to be read.

http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/road-sa ... an-tickets" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This spring, the Michigan athletic department admitted what many had long suspected: Student football ticket sales are down, way down, from about 21,000 in 2012 to a projected 13,000-14,000 this season.

The department has blamed cell phones, high-definition TV and student apathy sweeping the nation. All real problems, to be sure, but they don't explain how Michigan alienated 40 percent of its students in just two years -- and their parents, too.

How did Michigan do it? By forgetting why we love college football.

Like charging students and jacking prices for parents sky high so that it resembles going to an NFL/MLB/NBA game?

I don't think that's generally a problem at FCS, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I take it that is Delaware's schedule with attendance? OK..so every UD poster is just bitching and moaning about tickets and whatnot...yet they are all still paying for them and showing up? I don't know, is what I am asking. I get my info from their site and here and it seems that all they do is bitch about tickets and empty stadiums.

Wait a sec...that isn't right. Those must be high attendance games for the whole league?

Eh, it's a Montana fan. They don't know much about what happens outside the Mountain time zone. Delaware, Appalachian - eh, all the East Coast schools blend into one another.

I heard an ad on the radio the other day about Maryland football. Big home game against tOSU, Iowa and Michigan State. Prices starting at only $150. WTF!?! A Redskins ticket is only $80. Twerps are going to be hurting this year with prices like that.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"

After seeing their home slate the next two years, I don't know if anyone can still be pissed they left the ACC.

BTW, just did a quick check online and there are tons of tickets well under $100.

I remember when they played Towson. TU gave back their tickets and told people to buy online because they were basically being given away for free.

Are you sure that wasn't a season ticket or package price? Obviously they have plenty of seats for less than $150 per game.

Very good article, but I'm not sure it resonates at the FCS level. Maybe some of the bigger FCS programs suffer from university greed and commercialization, but most programs in the "lesser" conferences with historically lower attendance do not. Student apathy has been an issue for years. :twocents:

I have a friend who wants to get Utah vs USC game tickets, but for a decent seat he said they are running around $250 apiece

He posted something with no nothing. Fuck him.

And, yes, all EC(b) schools blend together.

Not sure that cherry picking a top tier FCS school's attendance means shit. Aho Old Guy and 89Hen can suckit. They should both go to the Bluehen board or just ask 93henfan what he thinks.

OH. I forgot. Fans don't mean shit...just numbers. gotcha. Your school could sell out every game and the stands could be half empty...but on paper they were awesome. :tothehand:

Look at Michigan's home schedule this season...

App St, Miami (OH), Utah, Minnesota, Penn State, Indiana, Maryland

Now, look at what they were charging students for season tickets

$295

Couple that with the fact that Dave Brandon is a egomaniac hell bent on everything except the fans this isn't a shock. Many predicted this long ago with him.

Yet, Michigan will lead the nation in attendance, yet again, with close to 110k

Internet genius in his own thread about declining football crowds doesn't recognize figures from the top FCS attendance school over the last half-dozen years, nor the empirical evidence which shows a 16% decline at said school -- essentially validating the premise of his comment "I can see it with many teams in the FCS" ... and, where 'his' team played an away game on Sept 8, 2012.

A MacArthur Fellow, he ain't :dunce:

Not sure where I ever said I was smart. You did. :dunce:

Oh...gotcha. We should only use the TOP FCS attendance school, your words, for our basis. Great idea.

Time to bring back Pogs and Baseball cards.

College football is starting to realize you can't price people out - they'll just watch it on TV then.

Rarely will it be much better with the new alignment

Would you pay 250 bucks for that home schedule at your school?
