UK doctors vote for partial cigarette sales ban

Post by VictorG »

Good for them! Wish we could do the same. Reduce the cost of health care hundreds of billions of dollars over the years.

The British Medical Association voted on Tuesday in favor of a lifelong ban on cigarette sales to those born after 2000, another step toward the group's ultimate goal of a tobacco-free society by 2035.

The argument behind the age-based ban is that "smoking is not a rational, informed choice of adulthood,"

Yep.
-Fed excise tax of $1.01 per pack
-State excise taxes that range from $.30 (VA) to $4.35 (NY) per pack. + Many some cities impose an additional excise tax (like NYC $1.50).
-State and local sales taxes

2011 brought in over 17.6 billion in tax tobacco revenue (not sure if that even included sales taxes). Many states have since raised tobacco taxes:

+ the 1998 246 billion/25 yr in settlements between the states & major cigarette manufacturers.

+ people if everyone quit smoking they will live longer costing us tens of billions a year in more social security and medicare paid out.

You want to save social security and medicare? Have everyone start smoking 3 packs a day. Drop the avg life expectancy by years. Problem solved... :coffee:
