"Rampant" Discrimination Against Atheists!!!

:ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

(CNN) When Americans think of their future in-laws, they approve of nearly every type of person - except for atheists.

A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center aimed to examine political polarization. It asked Americans whether they would be disappointed if a close family member married someone of a different race, country, political party or someone who doesn't believe in God.

Less than 20% of Americans said they would be unhappy if a close family member married someone from the opposite political party and only 11% said they would be upset if that person was of a different race.

But 49% of Americans said they would be disappointed if their family member married an atheist, making nonbelievers by far the most stigmatized group in the survey.

Discrimination against atheists is “rampant,” said Dave Muscato, public relations director for American Atheists, an advocacy organization that fights for the separation of government and religion.

There is a stigma against atheism because there is so much misinformation about atheists,” Muscato said in an e-mail. “Atheists don't hate your god, we aren't evil, and we're not immoral; we are simply not convinced that your god exists.”

One of the most common stereotypes about atheists is they are angry white guys, said Phil Zuckerman, a professor of sociology at Pitzer College in California who has studied secularism.

The reasons for this animosity toward atheists are multifaceted, he said.

For one, religion has been a major part of American culture since the country was founded, and many Americans continue to associate nonreligiosity with immorality.

Further, thanks to practices such as the Pledge of Allegiance, many Americans associate God and religion with patriotic values and atheism with being un-American.

“There’s a stigma for being anti-black, there’s a stigma for being anti-Jewish, there’s a stigma for being anti-gay,” Zuckerman said. “There has never been a stigma for being anti-atheist.”

Zuckerman and Muscato said that atheists need to come out of the shadows to gain more mainstream acceptance.

“Pretty much everyone knows at least one person who's an atheist,” Muscato said. “They just may not know it, because the prejudice is so strong that atheists have reasons for not talking about their atheism.”

Atheists are OK as individuals, but not as a group. I wouldn't want my daughter to marry one, if you know what I mean.

That's why I bolded it in red, I was LMAO @ that!!!!

I watch a lot of atheist stuff when (if) it's ever on cable and on YouTube, and I never see anger. I see thoughtful discourse and intelligence. The stereotype may have been correct when atheists and Commies were agitating in the early 1900's, but, not no more.

MOF, More than half the atheists I see on media are female.

Angry white men? Shit, YouTube is overflowing with preachers got veins poppin out they necks, screaming about sumpin (or someone) they hate.

Atheism has a big image problem. It's not just the Richard Dawkins types that run around wearing their false sense of intellectual superiority on their sleeves. It's also the freedom from (lol, from) religion dickheads that try to get roadside memorial crosses removed and seem to think they have a right to never feel ostracized because they lack the capacity to be educated and possess religious faith at the same time.

Only a guy from Sticky Pines, GA, could do a reply like that.

You criticize people for acting superior, then turn around and make the generalization that non-religious people are that way because they "lack the capacity" for it? Try again, Mort.

I'm not claiming any intellectual or moral superiority.

What I'm saying is basically true. There are theists, vegetarians, minorities, gays, and lesbians who give bad names to their kind. The difference is that with atheism you can stay in the closet indefinitely, even from your family and closest friends. You are more likely to know if a coworker or acquaintance belongs to one of those groups than you are going to know if they are atheist.

Because of that, people are more likely to associate atheism with Godless, more-rational-than-thou proselytizers than someone they know who is an atheist and is an okay person.

I'm guessing the fact that there are atheist groups that specialize in being pricks is a factor. You know, stuff like we've talked about before like posting "rain on your parade" signs during the Christmas and Eastern seasons.

And stuff like going to court to make a big deal about something like a war memorial cross being on public property. Total prickness.

Heck, even something like going to court to stop a local community from having a prayer read over the intercom at a high school football game. You have to be a prick to do something like that.

Maybe the majority of atheists are pricks and maybe not. But the actions of the people that do stuff like that just fosters an "atheists are pricks" impression.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
