Youngstown's New President

Post by Willie »

Can't say I didn't see this coming...

YSU Board of Trustees names James P. Tressel president
YSU Board of Trustees names James P. Tressel president

The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to offer the position of president to James P. Tressel, executive vice president for Student Success at the University of Akron.

Trustees authorized board Chair Sudershan Garg and Vice Chair John Jakubek to negotiate and execute an employment contract with Tressel. Garg emphasized that the appointment is not final until contract terms can be reached.

Tressel, former head football coach at YSU as well as Ohio State University, would become YSU’s ninth president, succeeding Randy J. Dunn, who resigned in March to become president of Southern Illinois University...

It'll definitely be good for their athletic department.

The bio portion of the announcement says that his best degree is an M.Ed. Don't most schools have a requirement that the big staff positions, especially component school deans and presidents, have a Ph.D./equivalent and professorial experience? Sure, he probably had SOME sort of college-level teaching experience (the ubiquitous football coaching theory class required for football players as a way to install the offense, defense, and special teams and "offered" to the rest of the student body as a way to justify the units for the players), but that would hardly count as a "professorship," right?

At least Liverpool John Moores University had a legit Ph.D. (astrophysics, no less) for their Chancellor 2008-2013 with Dr. Brian May. Youngstown can't even say that now, unless they award him some bogus honorary doctorate....

I wonder if he'll make more money than Eric Wolford, or if he'll install himself as head coach when Wolford's contract expires.

If he actually does the JOB of President (vice shoving it off on the veep and the provost), I highly doubt that he'll have time to coach the football team. Besides, he'd pretty much have to add on the THIRD job of A.D. to prevent the ignominy of having the A.D. fire him after a bad season brought on by the previous coach leaving the cupboard bare. ("The game has OBVIOUSLY passed him by....")

You're correct that Tressel doesn't mean the minimum academic qualifications for the vast majority of senior-level university jobs (especially President). That said, their Board of Trustees either has some sort of unique plan for his presidency or they legitimately don't care that they hired somebody who will never win the support of their faculty. If a professor had lied or cheated similarly to Tressel, their academic career would be over. They certainly wouldn't get promoted to President.

The amount of god worship that goes on with him in NE Ohio is sickening, really
