If you get a chance, read thru these articles on the Lori Roscetti case
http://www.chicagotribune.com/chi-dpros ... 03.special" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Lori was a High School friend - we took all our classes together, were the top math and science students at our high school. She was raped and brutally murdered in 1986 while coming home from a late night medical school study session.
4 teenagers were convicted in her killing. The judge wanted to give them the death penalty, but couldn't because of their age.
15 years later, DNA evidence cleared the 4. The police were under great pressure to find the killers of a pretty blond medical student. They coercered a confession. The Crime Lab falsified evidence
A year later, the same DNA evidence linked two other men to the crime.
So not only did the Roscetti family have to suffer the loss of their youngest, they have to live with the fact that 4 teens spent 15 years locked up in adult prison for a crime they didn't commit.
They ALWAYS suck at MATH

I was ambivalent on the DP until I had to help decide a horrific case (I've posted on it before). Cliff's notes, our jury convicted the guy of murder, chose the death penalty in '96, and he's still kickin' in an NC jail now. If it's Texas or Virginia it's one thing because the guy probably won't outlive his sentence, but most other places with the DP don't really pursue it very hard.

While I agree with the premise (i.e. way too many flaws in the system to really justify continuing the death penalty) the Roscetti family was in no way culpable or responsible for the miscarriage in justice that was inflicted on those 4 innocent teens. That's something that the cops and prosecutors should, but probably don't, feel guilty about.
I should have been clearer - they were not responsible for the convictions of the 4, but they felt personally horrible that 4 teens had their lives ruined as well - additional victims of the crime.
Obama has killed more innocent people in his two terms than law enforcement errors over several decades. You should be calling for Obama to be in prison for his actions...but he's your killer, so everything is OK.

Mental illness, in theory, has long been a mitigating circumstance in death penalty cases.89Hen wrote:What if you were genuinely mentally ill and commited a horrible act?Pwns wrote:I have no problem with putting people like this guy down like rabid dogs. There have been some nuts who have been put down I am sure, but generally speaking if the defense team can substantiate mental illness (and it really isn't that hard to do), then the death penalty isn't going to be used.

Re: Botched OK Execution: Europe not pleased
It's not a vacation, but I know some are too comfortable. I've toured quite a few. We have about 2.5 million people incarcerated. Approximately 40% are non-violent offenders. The people that need to be there (i.e. not your local pot smoker) should be working as a ward of the state (or the nation.) We pay almost $21k a year for an inmate at a minimum security prison and those inmates give nothing back. Let them work, cleaning highways, clearing debris after a storm, fixing whatever, etc... The prisons i've been in, were minimum security and people are just hanging out, reading, praying, working out, watching television, etc... Fuck that.89Hen wrote:I know Holiday Inn's are pretty crappy, but you really think prison is a vacation?Ibanez wrote:less like a Holiday Inn
On the other hand, we incarcerate too many people for stupid bullshit, like buying a gram of pot. It's not a perfect idea/solution but hey, it's better than letting them rot while wasting our money.
Either put them to work, let them go or just kill them.

I disagree. Somebody who is mentally healthy does not do that. I'm not trying to absolve people of their crimes or say they shouldn't do time and possibly hard time, but capital punishment is unnecessary and IMO barbaric. That's all.Ibanez wrote:Yes and no. You would think. I think I posted the story on here about how my neighbor was allowing her boyfriend to molest the 8 year old daughter and beat the 4 yr old boy. He was put in a medium security prison, until he was nearly beaten to death for being a child molester. He's now at the high security facility about 20 miles up the road from me. Of course, low-medium-high security prisons are very offenders at different levels of sentencing and crimes.89Hen wrote:That should be your signature line.Ibanez wrote:The prisons i've been in, were minimum security...![]()

Re: Botched OK Execution: Europe not pleased
I see your point. I feel that people that commit heinous crimes, like serial killers, rapists, etc... have decided to not conform to a decent lifestyle. They are a danger to everyone so what is the point in letting them live. Especially when they have destroyed so many lives. I'm not trying to argue or anything like that, it's just my POV.89Hen wrote:I disagree. Somebody who is mentally healthy does not do that.
