Eyewitness evidence is impeachable, but it is still VERY powerful in court, and also in influencing prosecutorial decisions.

Nothing is as powerful as physical evidence, but the good ol eyewitness still runs a close second. It was eyewitness evidence that ultimately swayed the Trayvon Martin jury- a jury that would have LOVED an excuse to put Zimmerman in jail.

I think that in this case, as with others, the fact that DAs have to win elections plays a role. It cuts both ways, too- it puts innocent people behind bars because there is a constituency behind prosecution which can lead to "good enough" prosecutorial decisions rather than ironclad ones.
