One of the biggest expenses of the current war machine budget is man power...All these reduce that.....In the case of the rail gun, not only is manpower reduced, so is weight and physical requirements for weapons systems and also the size and cost of projectiles.

Rail gun is to be deployed within the next few years. The lasers are working and being tested but they need some advancement in high capacity capacitors for rapid fire ability. Lasers may be a bit farther out.
