FBI surrounds home in rural central Indiana; agency says agents seizing artifacts



WALDRON, Ind. (AP) -

FBI agents have surrounded a home in rural central Indiana to confiscate what the agency is calling artifacts.

A spokeswoman from the FBI in Indianapolis wouldn't identify the artifacts being recovered Wednesday, but she said there was no immediate threat to the public.

Other details weren't immediately released about the investigation in Rush County about 35 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Television helicopter video showed a mobile FBI command vehicle, a moving van and several tents alongside a two-story home near the town of Waldron.

The FBI has scheduled a news conference about the investigation for Wednesday afternoon.

Apparently the guy is an amateur archeologist and artifacts collector with a notable collection dating back to WWII. He also may have worked on the Manhattan Project, and as evidenced by several huge antennae on the property is a radio enthusiast.

"Amateur archaeologist" is a bullshit term. Unless they're recording provenience and contexts for the artifacts they collect, they're simply looters and their artifacts have no archaeological value.

I learned a new word. But it seems a big stringent to say that there can't be any "archeological value" for an object unless a very precise three dimensional point at which it was found is not known.

Yes I can see where that would be important. But NO archeological value regardless of the circumstances and what it is?

It may have some "value"... but, it ain't archaeological.

Look at any Bubba's "arrowhead" collection. Tons of otherwise archaeological valuable stuff that is absolutely worthless (archaeologically) because it's just a pile of "stuff" with no information attached. It's cool. And, I love when rednecks bring their artifact collections in for us to look at ... they find a lot of incredible stuff.

When you remove something from the ground you remove any context or associations with the artifacts - stuff that arrowhead hunters and looters don't care about - but, it is what archaeological knowledge is based on.
