FBI seizing artifacts at rural Indiana home

FBI surrounds home in rural central Indiana; agency says agents seizing artifacts

Image

WALDRON, Ind. (AP) -

FBI agents have surrounded a home in rural central Indiana to confiscate what the agency is calling artifacts.

A spokeswoman from the FBI in Indianapolis wouldn't identify the artifacts being recovered Wednesday, but she said there was no immediate threat to the public.

Other details weren't immediately released about the investigation in Rush County about 35 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Television helicopter video showed a mobile FBI command vehicle, a moving van and several tents alongside a two-story home near the town of Waldron.

The FBI has scheduled a news conference about the investigation for Wednesday afternoon.

Apparently the guy is an amateur archeologist and artifacts collector with a notable collection dating back to WWII. He also may have worked on the Manhattan Project, and as evidenced by several huge antennae on the property is a radio enthusiast.

Interesting stuff.

I'm guessing he probably "collected" a few too many illegal things.

Wrong. His property houses the entrance to the bunker where all the 9/11 "victims" are living.

Fuck looters.

"Amateur archaeologist" is a bullshit term. Unless they're recording provenience and contexts for the artifacts they collect, they're simply looters and their artifacts have no archaeological value.

Having said that, looting is legal if it's on private property. Since the FBI is involved, this dumbass was almost certainly looting on federal land.

provenience
I learned a new word. But it seems a big stringent to say that there can't be any "archeological value" for an object unless a very precise three dimensional point at which it was found is not known.

Yes I can see where that would be important. But NO archeological value regardless of the circumstances and what it is?
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Archaeology is all context and provenience.

It may have some "value"... but, it ain't archaeological.

Look at any Bubba's "arrowhead" collection. Tons of otherwise archaeological valuable stuff that is absolutely worthless (archaeologically) because it's just a pile of "stuff" with no information attached. It's cool. And, I love when rednecks bring their artifact collections in for us to look at ... they find a lot of incredible stuff.

When you remove something from the ground you remove any context or associations with the artifacts - stuff that arrowhead hunters and looters don't care about - but, it is what archaeological knowledge is based on.

Well then I guess I am a looter. I find arrowheads from time to time while in the woods and pick them up and take them home. Guess I should be arrested...right? :tothehand:

Agents of the FBI's art crime team began loading trucks with artifacts that Donald Miller acquired over the decades from sites as varied as China, Russia and Papua New Guinea. However, the FBI was careful not to say whether they believed Miller had knowingly broken any laws. The FBI's aim is to catalog the artifacts and return them to their countries of origin.

The laws regarding the removal or collection of cultural artifacts are extremely complex. State, federal and international laws are involved, Patty Gerstenblith, a professor of law at DePaul University in Chicago. Much depends on whether objects are considered stolen or were imported with a license, and international treaties dating back as far as 1987 come into play. The United States has various agreements with 15 countries that prohibit importation of items that were illegally acquired, she said, and some nations such as Egypt forbid the export of any cultural objects that were dug from the ground.

Leave the old guy alone....I'm guessing he probably got some of this stuff before 1987 since he's 91 yrs old. The FBI will spend 10 yrs "processing" the "evidence" and the guy or his family will never see it again regardless of the legality of how he obtained it. Douchebags. :ohno:

yes, but

I thought native americans were paragons of the bohemian socialist ideal that you guys love so much

How can you decry this man's collection of things that have no owners

and yet applaud the social utopian "nothing belongs to anyone/everything belongs to everyone" (which was destroyed by the Indo-European regulatory-military-civilization machine) that this indian guy is obviously adhering to?

its a paradox i tell you

yeah, native americans have long been paragons of the left (and the right)... but, largely based on two myths that are complete bullshit (though, still largely believed).
