Agree to disagree. Nobody can prove free will. Hell, kids today are inundated with commercials for toys and candy. Do they really want them or are the conditioned to want them? That certainly isn't free will. Demanding worship and obedience doesn't make you capable of free will, either.

That's just my humble opinion.

Instead of rambling on aimlessly on a message board about theology, maybe you guys should actually read some theology and philosophy. There are many very distinguished minds that have addressed the questions and issues being raised here. But you guys would rather just pull this stuff out of your asses and then argue pedantically about how right you are and how wrong someone else is. :ugeek:

When I see evidence that some of you have actually sought answers to the issues raised here -- that you have actually read some philosophy and theology on point -- I'll join in again.

So much for instructing the ignorant.

Ramblings aside, it takes a leap of faith to believe in God, adhere to a religion and it's teachings. You must have blind faith. I can't accept that.

I've read Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth", "Coyote Was Going There" - a collection of NW Indian creation stories, and "When Will Jesus Pass the Porkchops?" by George Carlin.

Can we talk again?

i agree with your Spandos analogy on a certain level- and Ill add that truthers like him are probably similar to fundie christians in terms of the size of their demographic

but the christianity bashers like Maher are little different than the assholes who thought the entire US government was overrun with communists- they create a tempest in a teapot over nothing. he might as well be railing against foot fetishists

but youve missed the most important part- i dont think Maher is a prick because hes wrong- because i dont think hes wrong

Maher is a prick because he's mean spirited, unimaginitive (he isnt saying anything that much more articulate and smarter people like Hitchens havent already said), and hes not funny.

sidebar to all of this

Why doesnt Maher go after Hasidic Jews? Why just Christians? Mahers mad at Christians specifically for some reason and his schtick reeks of spite because of it.

so to paraphrase you-

I don't believe in God (me, CID1990) and Bill Maher is an insufferable, unfunny prick and it has nothing to do with whether he is right or not

Dont be dumb.

He made a wave and a nod at all religions there- but the underpinning of the whole thing (and his continuing rants) are all focused on christianity

CID,

Did it ever occur to you that he focuses on Christians more because we're in a "Christian Country"? :dunce:

I'm just trying to help you out with all of this, to assist you in sorting through your feelings and I want you to know, it's OK that you hate Bill Maher. It's OK.

Christianity's problem is those annoying evangelicals. Most christians are fine people and would make anybody a great neighbor. Then there is the segment that expects you to be bowled over with wonder as they enlighten you with the cosmology of ancient goat-herders. Those are the ones that make the whole religion such an easy target because most everybody has had to deal with those annoying have-you-heard-the-good-news types. Throw in christianity's institutional hatred of women and these priests that won't stop fvcking children...
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

You are completely right about Maher. Big mouth needs his ass kicked and then he would shut up. He knows Christians won't do that so he keeps spouting off. His bullshit is weak, and that is why I love the video of Hitchens telling him his fans are idiots and his schtick is tired in regards to Bush. Maher looks as if he is going to cry.

That CID has lost his edge..?

:coffee: what..?

1) God is perhaps the most exciting subject before humanity
2) The Bible is an iron age fable

It's impossible to have a serious conversation about God with people referencing the Bible...
It's like trying to have a serious conversation about The Cosmos with somebody who thinks the Earth is the center of the Universe

We must MOVE forward

To claim knowledge of a god being out there is extremely arrogant. Why is your god more real than any other god? Why is the fake Christian god more real than the fake Hindu god? Oh, because you have read some things that agree with you? Never mind, you are right. Sorry for disagreeing.

I wasn't really speaking to you so much as others. But since you bring up the "leap of faith" necessary for to have faith (you also need a leap of faith to be an atheist), let me give yo a cite to an analysis of Soren Kierkegaard and others, written by Dr. Paul F. Sands.

You will get a lot more for your effort for reading Paul Sands than reading the silly things people post here about faith, free will, the "angry Christian God" ( ), etc. If this interests you, you can pick up Kierkegaard himself.

Kierkegaard too thought it was a "leap of faith" to believe, but after reading Kierkegaard, you might conclude not only that this leap is reasonable and rational, it is the most rational decision you will make about God.

I read this book when it was first published about 10 years ago or so, and thought it was a good summary of Kierkegaard's rational leap of faith. Unfortunately, the way this book is excerpted, the discussion presented is confusing, as some critical pages are omitted. You'll have to get the book out of a library to understand what he is saying.

Joe, try to follow along.

1. Everyone here believes in some higher power, or god if you will. OK? No need for you to dick measure by mentioning all the books you read or how many years you wasted studying nonsense or how many well known catholic dogmatists are your close personal friend.

1. Everyone here believes in some higher power, or god if you will. OK? No need for you to dick measure by mentioning all the books you read or how many years you wasted studying nonsense or how many well known catholic dogmatists are your close personal friend.

No, not really... not everyone.

I really do think that Carl Sagan was correct- that maybe there are higher forms of intelligence than our own, but those are not gods or God. Individually we are just the stuff of the cosmos, our atoms and molecules come together in an ordered way for an instant, and once we burn out, we return to inanimate matter.

Nothing-Something-Nothing

That's why I get defensive when people are ridiculed for their honestly held religious beliefs... because we all have different coping mechanisms for this realization ^^^ (if we ever even consider it at all)

Some of us accept it. I'm in that group and I think we are rare birds

The other end of the spectrum is people who cannot accept/comprehend it. The mere acceptance of it might drive them mad- there's your religion- there HAS to be some other reason- there HAS to be more to it than that.

So my defensiveness of/for Christians is not as altruistic or kind hearted as you might think..... it is actually probably condescending and paternalistic more than anything, and I'll freely admit that... like thinking it is UNCOOL to tell someone's 6 year old that there is no Santa Claus.

Belief in Jesus as the Son of God and belief in Santa are equally harmless to me (me, CID1990) and therefore I see no reason to have a crusade against them. And I totally get Chizstain's take on it- the 'brainwashing is murder' thingy... I get that

I just think the ridicule thing makes people assholes.

You're underestimating the inherent dangers and utter ridiculousness of certain "coping mechanisms."

You should note that maher doesn't take shots at eastern mysticism and others cuz they ain't run by assholes who fleece and make people do stupid shit. He's got a particular hard on for the Catholics because they rape children and promote bigotry. Same thing with the Muslim and fundamentalist assholes who desire a violent repressive theocracy.

Just admit they're some of the worst "interpretations", hence his ridicule.
