Exactly. And if Maher was mean spirited AND funny, we'd all like him. But, alas, he isn't funny. So he's just a vitriolic prick.
Like I've mentioned several times before, his monologue sucks, but the show as a whole is very entertaining, with great guests, and often times…it's funny. Maher IS mean spirited and sometimes…funny…just like you and CID. Quit projecting.

People have different senses of humor, some people like the Stooges, some don't. Some people like Maher, a lot of people don't. Maher jabs at religion a lot, but I don't think he really looks down at people of faith; he is more focused on the things people do in the name of faith.

I always thought that Al Franken and Dennis Miller are funny, but I find them less funny when they are political. It's tough to be funny while talking politics, although I think Jon Stewart is great at it.

JoltinJoe wrote:Yes, the story of Noah, like all of Genesis, is allegorical and not to be taken literally, although there is significant evidence of a great flood which took many lives. The point of the story is generally to identify man's sinfulness as the cause of an imperfect world in which catastrophes occur, and in that respect the story is consistent with the creation allegory of Genesis. The story is also significant because it specifies the existence of a covenant between God and man.

There well have been a man named Noah who survived the flood with members of his family, but he certainly did not build an enormous ark (he may have built a small, floating vessel which saved him and his family). He didn't take two of every known creature with him on the ark, although he may have saved some animals essential to his family's existence). No doubt, no matter how great the flood, not all mankind perished, and not every animal on the face of the planet died.

The allegory of Noah's Ark also ties into a Gospel story about a tragic collapse of a tower which killed 16 people, and Jesus' explanation about that tragedy.

Again, the Bible must be as a whole, and there is certainly a link between the allegory of Noah and Jesus' explanation concerning catastrophic events.

So Bill Maher is a :dunce:
So basically what I've known all alone. Rome, while demanding their followers to conform to everything they teach, don't even believe the book they are getting it from. Hmmm........even Christ Himself spoke of Noah's Flood as if it were a real event per Scripture.

Another reason I am glad I left Rome.

sincerely yours,

I don't think anyone begrudges Bill Maher's opinion, but you are playing games by posting him and then playing the "he's entitled to his opinion" card. You aren't stupid, so that leaves only one other possibility.

He ridicules people, dude. He's an insufferable ass and there's nothing wrong with finding fault with him there. He could simply say he doesn't believe in God but he doesn't. He says "I don't believe in God and you must be some kind of idiot caveman because you do."

I'll sum it up for you...Joe bailed out when asked to explain why God watches while children get repeatedly raped by their fathers...something God put in his plan when he designed Man (because God doesn't make mistakes).

Apparently, it doesn't take a Phd to ask or answer that question, but it takes one to duck it. :thumb:

Nice try.

IF God knows EVERYTHING...and he'd have to if he were all powerful...then he knows all of our moves ahead of time. Each and every move throughout all time.

When I bake a cake, I know what ingredients to add, what temperature to bake it at and for how long, in order to make it taste and feel a certain way. Of course, things in my world change (humidity, room temperature impacting the actual cooling of the cake, different taste to a particular ingredient from a different brand, etc.), so my cake might not come out exactly as I planned.

But, God doesn't have that problem. God has foreseen every single thing that man has done or will do, from the moment God created man. God put the exact ingredients in us that made us capable of rape. If God didn't actually want rape, he would not have put rape in as a possibility. We can't create what God didn't see us "creating", or "choosing", when God created us. All of our actions might seem to be from "free will," but God already knew our possible list of choices, and what choices we'd make, when he made us.

If Fred repeatedly raped his little girl Mary, then God surely knew Fred would do that from the beginning of time when he first created Man.

You act as though God didn't know Fred was going to rape Mary.

And hey, since he already knows Fred's choice, why does God need to let Fred actually rape Mary? Mary has something to learn from the rape? :suspicious:

Sorry, SeattleGriz, "free will" ain't the answer.

You are not getting it. God may sit around and watch a girl get raped, but God already set that in motion a long time ago. God made us...and when he made us he knew each of our decisions before we made them. Our decisions were preordained, by God. The way he built us determined our decisions. If God had made us differently, we'd have made different decisions.

There is no way around it...if God is all powerful and all knowing, then we can't make a decision that God didn't set us up to make. Nothing we do is different than God's original plan. That is not free will. Rape was in God's plan...he allowed it. In fact, God created rape.

That's different than what Chitzang said. He said Maher takes issue with the Bible. Or are you suggesting that there is some new Christian sect out there that has eschewed the Bible as the source text of the religion? I'd like to meet them, if you have. There's a bible up there on the podium of the First Fudgepacker Baptist Church of Jesus Christ and Rainbows. Are they fundamentalists?

Try to keep up, Klam.

On what authority are you basing that God has made all our decisions for us?

Funny how you say God can do all, but then put Him in a box to make your argument. Your two versions of God are not congruent.

If God has all the power you say He does, surely He has the power to allow freewill.

I think God is best thought of as a universal, cosmic flow. Life is better if you try live with the current of that flow rather than trudge against it. An unselfish, caring person who tries to live for a greater good is a happy person. A person who lives life with a take whatever I can get, do unto other before they do unto me philosophy will, inevitably, be a miserable person.

Maybe the concept of heaven and hell actually refers to life here on earth and the wisdom contained within religious texts are simply guides on how to live a happy, content life. Wouldn't that be something?

What is the alternative?

If we are to follow the bible then God created us. God created earth. God created the sun days after he created light. He can do anything! Including predetermine our movements. He is all knowing and in creating us he knew exactly what we would do. Therefore, do we really have a choice?
