I won't miss him a whole bunch but you gotta admit that no one has done more for tolerance of the gay community than he and his church.

I wasted reading 3 pages about a guy I've never heard about before today...and I've gained nothing of value from this thread (although D1B's, "effete square jaw" comment got a small snicker). :coffee:

Had to think about this for a while.

Fred Phelps died, best thing he ever did.

Is that nice enough?

Nailed it. Nothing pulls a community closer together than a common foe - same with the military funerals.

The star of this thread was the pounding Joe took. Within minutes of him calling out Phelp's clan's cowardice, I nail him with a breaking story of his fucking church doing the EXACT same thing with their pedophiles.

The accompanying killer whale vid was icing on the cake. :coffee:

Today the world is a better place. Fred Phelps biting the dust on a beautiful spring day is more than an appropriate way to end a harsh winter. :D

If there is a hell may he burn in it...if not let the worms have a buffet.

That's enough keystrokes wasted on Phelps.
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

I hate to break it to you guys but most of the disdain for Phelps hasn't been because he doesn't/didn't like homosexuals. It's because his people showed up to disrupt military funerals.

Not that there's not WAY too much concern for the feelings of homosexuals nowadays. There is. But that's not why Phelps is/was so reviled.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

The ole urban legend that I have read that spawned Fred's hatred for all things gay was that he was raped by cadets at West Point when he visited there as a teenager. Take it for what it is, but the piece I read had people that were close to him stating that he came back from that trip "not quite right".

Doesn't justify he or his family over the years but I won't celebrate anybody's death. I cried at how pathetic this nation celebrated Bin Laden's death. None of us get out of here alive. RIP Fred and may God have mercy on your soul.

Nice try, but wrong as usual. Phelps was reviled because he was a hater. The fact that he picked on more than one group just gave those groups something in common. When people saw Phelps they saw an asshole and sympathized with whoever he was targeting. The military funerals may or may not have put him on the map, but once he got there every group he went after got sympathy. He probably did gays more good than bad.

I might as well save this thread...

I had 5+ beers with Dbackjon.

He was a Gentleman.

If I had kids, I would trust him and his husband with them without batting an eye :thumb: :thumb:  :notworthy: :notworthy: :thumb: :thumb:

He was "almost" as good a guy as Ursus...that is saying a lot.

"SOAP BOX"

Jon is a guy I would give a car to without hesitation. He, and anyone he was with, could stay in a spare bedroom with no worries. If I was gone for a week and he was in town, he would be trusted by me to stay in my place.

If you had kept your pants on, you wouldn't be so smitten. Admit it, you got drunk and allowed him to tickle your fancy.

And, we all know, once you've had dback, you never go back.
