hydraulic fracturing is not progress
Unless you consider a practice started 75 years ago in the 1940's progress?
Well, some people consider wind turbines progress, and those were in existence as early as the 1st century AD.
What's your point? Hybrid engines have been around since the early 20th century but didn't gain popularity until recently (past 10-12 years.)
I think what they are getting at is that using those more and more, developing the technology even more is progress towards the goal of weening ourselves off of our dependence on oil.
"Airplane pilots hit by ‘nearly blinding’ glare from massive Calif. solar facility
Airplane pilots cruising over southern California have been complaining about a “nearly blinding” glare emanating from a massive government-funded solar thermal facility.
The Ivanpah solar energy plant in San Bernardino County is the world’s largest solar thermal plant and has 173,500 large mirrors that reflect sunlight onto boilers in three 459-foot towers. A feat of modern engineering — to green energy advocates, but a flying hazard to pilots.........." http://dailycaller.com/2014/03/18/airpl ... -facility/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Donks...
Do you have a solution?
Yes.
-Coal. We are the Saudi Arabia of coal. Clean coal has much lower carbon emissions than the old technology coal. Despite that, Obama is trying to kill coal. Coal plant would produce more energy taking up a fraction of the land.
-Natty gas. We are the Saudi Arabia of natty gas, which has very low carbon emissions. Also would produce more energy using less land. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 85133.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
-Nuclear. Not massive nuke plants, but the small ones like they use on Navy ships. Zero carbon emissions. Use a fraction of the land.

They could reroute planes away from the facility during daylight hours.
Or they could bitch about donks on a message board.
Yes.

How about not flying near the facility?
Sunglasses?

2 of those aren't sustainable.
Are likely for the rest of the century..

And then what? Or do you only care about today?
Maybe by then solar will be less expensive, more efficient, and use less land. Forcing more expensive energy upon people when there are cheaper alternatives is dumb.
And Hydroelectric, GeoThermal, Nuclear- all sustainable, all far less expensive than solar.

So you are okay with solar, as long as we continue to use more cost efficient energy sources? That is reasonable.
We need to used everything. As the "green" techs become cheaper/more efficient we can ween ourselves off fossil fuels as needed/desired.
We can't give up on the "green" energy sources. They make take a lot of work and cost a lot of money, but the investment is worth it (I hope).
We have to use fossil fuels right now, they are too cost effective to ignore. We just have to try and figure out a way to make them burn as cleanly as possible.

I'm game on solar and hydro (which is nothing new). Wind...meh. Disappointed we aren't investing in nuclear. If we truly want to ween off of fossil fuels that is the route we should take imo.
