Creighton's McDermott unanimous Big East player of year, Villanova's Wright coach of year
Published March 12, 2014 /
Associated Press

NEW YORK – Doug McDermott, the nation's leading scorer who led Creighton to a second-place finish in its first year in the Big East, is the unanimous choice as the conference's player of the year.

Jay Wright, who led Villanova to its first outright Big East title since 1982, is the coach of the year and DePaul freshman guard Billy Garrett, Jr., is the rookie of the year in a vote of the conference coaches released Wednesday.

McDermott is looking to become the 11th three-time All-America and first since 1985. He is the seventh-leading scorer in NCAA history with 3,011 points and is averaging 26.5 points per game this season. He is believed to be the first player to win player of the year honors in two conferences. He was Missouri Valley Conference player of the year last season.

So ends Nova's quest for a 1 seed. Worry for them: they haven't beat a top 40 team since November....

Not that tragic. Now they will be well rested and hungry for that long run in the NC's.

Wright is correct, being one of the top 4 seeds (in a region) doesn't make a whole lot of difference, so the loss isn't the end of the world.

But BHBK is right, and it's what we've been saying about the Big East all year. Smoke and mirrors and RPI's may try to make the Big East look like it's still an elite conference, but at the end of the day, it has two really good teams in it, and that's if clenz is wrong and Creighton can still pull it together late in the year. The teams at the bottom just not being terrible helps mask the RPI, but unlike the elite conferences, where you end up playing top 40 teams at least once a week since early January, nova has had the luxury of playing so-so teams for much of that time. And when they did step up and play the other good team, they got blitzed. When your last really good win over a really good team was Iowa back when people were still recovering from their Thanksgiving holiday, that's gotta be a little worrisome heading into the dance.

Still Big East bashing? Crazy. This is a really good conference. Nova just got beat by a middle of the road conference team. Seems to me that proves how deep it is. They have two top 50 recruits coming in next year too. They will be a handful.

As for Nova, I'm not as worried as you are. It has been a remarkable run regardless of posters pulling out random stats that really don't mean anything. The Cats are a #1 or #2 seed on merit.

Kansas, Iowa and Xavier, Providence, Georgetown and St. Johns twice. Undefeated in the Big 5. 20 point wins over those great A10 St.Joe Hawks at Hawk Hill. LaSalle by 20 another A10 er! Providence by 30?

After our last loss we won six straight...

Haters gonna Hate. Still a top four conference with a lot of parity between the teams this year. But get it right, a conference with a .750 out-of-conference winning percentage (and the 4th best RPI) is not weak overall. The Big East tourney will continue to draw because as we saw yesterday, on any given night any team can win... and people actually like that. Nothing compares to Big East basketball, it's history, it's proud programs and fans, and the best CBB conference tourney in the NCAA (and I'm a fan of the America East tbh...). Top to bottom I would fear any BE team on any given day ... Which other conference can boast that? The Big12?

This will be dismissed by some as biased, and well to be honest I'm a huge Cuse fan so yea it may be so but I'm extremely interested in watching the new ESPN 30 for 30 Sunday night after Bracketology - Requiem for the Big East.

I went to the BET three years in a row in the 90's during some of the BEC's heyday. Saw the infamous UConn-Georgetown final with Iverson, Ray Allen, Victor Page, Travis Knight, etc., one of the best college hoop games I've ever seen live. By far they were some awesome memories of hanging out in Manhattan for 3-4 straight days.

I watched some of the night doubleheader last night as I sat on my couch with my remote & flipped between conference tournaments. The BET is still in MSG, it still has some familiar names, it still has Bill Raferty, it may not be on ESPN anymore, but it has a JV feel to it now. It seems overrun now with teams that used to be in what were looked at as "lesser conferences" and some of the bottom feeders now having some success. Sure Villanova is still there, & even though they didn't have a good year Georgetown is still there. But look at the teams that left, namely: Syracuse, Louisville, UConn, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame. That's a lot of good basketball teams, it could be 1/4th of the top 16 seeded teams in the brackets that come out Sunday night.

I understand football rules the roost nowadays, but man, it used to be really, really awesome. The best ever, hands down. It just isn't anymore.

You're the guy who pulled out the stat of the Big East versus the A-10 this year, disregarding the fact that it was mainly the top of the Big East versus the bottom of the A-10. So who's pulling out random stats that don't mean anything?

Like I said, wins over Kansas and Iowa, though good wins, were back in November of 2013. Those are the last really good wins nova had. After your last loss, you played six straight Big East games - unfortunately for nova, there won't be six Big East teams in the tourney to play come next week (although it looks good to get 4 teams in at this point, assuming Providence gets one of the play-in game slots).

It's reality. You won't find a bigger Big East supporter than I was as recent as last year and going back to the late 70's when it was born. But reality is reality, the Big East today is a shadow of what it was. I went to Big East tourney's as well (loved watching God Shamgod - although strangely, God had no jump shot) - but a semifinal of Providence/Seton Hall and Creighton/Xavier is a far cry from what the conference put out even as recent as last year (Louisville/Gtown and Notre Dame/Syracuse). Of the top 9 teams from last year, only 3 are still playing in the Big East. That's reality. Last year, Seton Hall limped to 3-15 in conference, this year they are in the conference semis. That's reality. The Big East was the best conference in the nation up to last year, and had the best tournament. Now, just a shadow of what they were. That's reality.

I always liked that Shamgod was a point guard with good court vision - of course, being god, he should be able to see the whole court at the same time (and many other courts, for that matter). Providence also later had John Linehan, who would be Big East defensive player of the year, maybe twice. Saw him in high school for Chester when Chester was playing the Kobe-led Lower Merion teams. Gives you an idea of how good Kobe was, Kobe brought the ball down the floor against a triple team of Chester guards, one of whom was Linehan, and the other two went on to D1 b-ball programs as well. Those were epic games.

Creighton's late season swoon may have to wait for next year when McBuckets graduates don't you think? What a great college player!

No..is Iowa still considered a good win...answer the question.

Iowa....mind you...just lost to northwestern in the first round of the big 10 tourney...Iowa has lost 7 of the last 8...Iowa is the second worst b1g program record worse the last month and a half to two months...

Is Iowa still a good win

No, Villanova's only good win this year was Kansas back in November. They got blown out twice by the only other good Big East school. They are way overrated.

I say that Nova gets through the first weekend ok. After that it's the Sweet 16 and with few, if any exceptions, I am not that confident in picking anyone as a guarantee to move to the Elite 8 before brackets are out, Nova included. Could make for an exciting tourney.

Only thing that I'd feel safe betting is that nobody is getting Buffett's $1 Billion.

Most that have been updated as of today have Villanova as a 2 with Wisconsin being given the 1.

I saw that, but I think he is wrong. Villanova will almost definitely be a #2. Wichita St and Florida are practically locks right now. Arizona gets one if they win tonight, and even with a loss are likely to be seeded ahead of 'Nova. If either Duke or Virginia win the ACC they will be ahead of 'Nova, as will Louisville if they beat UConn later today. Also not out of the question that Creighton gets a higher seed if they win tonight.

Villanova would need a lot of help to get a #1 seed, and it might already be too late. They are more likely to drop to a #3 seed than get a #1 seed.

I didn't mention Wisconsin in my above post, but if either they or Michigan win the B1G they are probably ahead of 'Nova.

Not bad for an over rated team with only one good win.
