One - District has been REPUBLICAN for decades, and has majority republican representative
Two - Conk running was aide to highly popular congressman
Three - Said aide ran on platform reminding how much federal pork the previous congressman brought to district, and how much he personally had a hand in it.
Four - Sink is a shitty candidate, who ran away from Obamacare. Sink couldn't beat admitted fraud felon Prick Scott for Gov.

So in reality, the Dem was out-spent - by a guy using our own tax dollars.
One - The dead guy held the seat for 40+ years, so yeah it was decades.
Two - He was an aide who left the Congressman in 2007. Nobody knew who he was. She was the big name candidate.
Three - All candidates do that, even Stink.
Four - Of course she was a shitty candidate, she is a Donk afterall. She embraced Obamascare stating we can't go back to where we were and vowed to fix it.

Like Mountaineer, I give your spin an A for effort. It's not your fault, you were dealt some shitty cards.

He was in office 40 years, being redistricted 4 times. Look at the district he started out at and finished up. Here's a hint, he went from the Atlantic coast to the Gulf coast.

Spin or not, the Donks threw everything including the kitchen sink (pun, I know) into that race. After the Conk primary, she had $1.3 million in the bank compared to a little over $150K for Jolly. She was the hands down favorite and had everything...money, name recognition, and the party elites pushing her along.

Even though the Conks are doing everything they can to fuck it up, it looks like the first Tuesday in November is going to be a bloodbath.

Obama carried the district in 2008 and 2012. Sink carried the district in her 2010 run for governor. Sink had a 20 point lead in the polls at one point. Clinton and Biden visited to campaign. I'm not feeling she was an underdog here. :coffee:

Lots of spin on both sides but for now we can just be grateful that the Democrats didn't make an immediate gain so that the degradation of the country is slowed to at least some extent.

You know, I saw some comments on expecting better from Obama. My question is: "Why?"

Why on Earth did anybody think Obama was going to be a good President? Seriously. All other things aside, as I've said before, the United States population voted to elect a guy who was not qualified to manage a 7-11 to be the Chief Executive of the United States government. Why on EARTH would any sane person vote to do that?

I mean, good GRIEF.

I think both sides are reading too much into this. I do think this was a significant loss for the dems, but I'm not sold that this is some sort of a trend.

Economy was in the shitter 2 years ago and the dems pwned it. Economy is still in the shitter, Obamacare was/is a laughable execution of a marquee name-sake social program (plus the dozen or so other scandals/laughable Obama moments) and the repubs barely squeaked out a win. Maybe the fact that the dem was outspent 4:1 is eye raising, but who knows how the other races will play out.

The demographic in this vote was older, was Obamacare really at the forefront of the reason why they went with the repub?

It was the other way around. The conk was outspent nearly 4-1.

Uh oh...looks like there might have been more to the spending story in this race...

Jolly’s campaign raised and spent $1.3 million—barely half the total for Sink, whose background in the financial sector and in politics, as a former gubernatorial candidate, gave her some early advantages. As the campaign played out in February and early March, the polls suggested that Sink might secure an upset

Then Republican-allied national groups rushed to Jolly’s rescue

According to an analysis by Center for Public Integrity:

The National Republican Congressional Committee poured $2.2 million into the district.

The US Chamber of Commerce came through with $1.2 million.

The American Action Network, a group with close ties to the national GOP establishment, ponied up $470,000.

Karl Rove’s American Crossroads project was good for $470,000.
The Florida Republican Party and other Republican-allied and conservative groups pumped hundreds of thousands of additional dollars into the district.

To be sure, outside groups that favored Sink spent heavily on the race. But Jolly had the advantage. Roughly $5 million in outside money aided the Republican cause, as compared with roughly $3.7 million from groups that were friendly to the Democrat, according to the Center for Public Integrity.

The spending spree brought Jolly across the line by 3,456 votes Tuesday night. But that’s hardly a dramatic accomplishment, considering that the Republican nominee ran as a fifth-generation Floridianwith deep roots in the district and a claim on Young’s legacy—as the former general counsel for the congressman.
