If it makes you feel any better, I went from 5 weeks of vacation to 3 when I moved to Texas.

I knew it was a typo. And I totally agree with you on the size of house. Who needs all that extra room? You're just going to fill it with things you don't need, and probably impart into your kids some sense of entitlement to living in an extravagant house as a condition of their happiness as an adult.JohnStOnge wrote:Darn. That's the kind of typo that totally blows the point. 1,500 square foot home.I'm sure it's a very humble 15,000 square foot home.

Try finding a 1500 square foot home in Texas that isn't a complete piece of shit.JoltinJoe wrote:I knew it was a typo. And I totally agree with you on the size of house. Really, grandpa? Tell us more.JohnStOnge wrote:I've always been the type that if you gave me $5,000,000 and told me to spend it on a residence I would think in terms of buying some nice land out in the country with access to fishing and spend as little as I could on constructing a house on it. Most of the money would go to getting as much nice land as I could. I mean I'd want a nice comfortable house but making it large would not be an objective. Of course I'd have to use some of the money to by herbivores to keep the grass down. My wife likes horses so some of those. And that would mean I'd have to have a barn of some type.
But I have no desire at all for a "mansion." Not my cup of tea.
My own little house is in one of those neighborhoods with limited access. You know a little street goes into the entrance and the neighborhood is like a big rounded-edges rectangle. It makes for a nice walkway, running track, etc. In fact it's 1 1/10 miles around and that's my running track. Lots of trees that have had plenty of time to grow since the neighborhood was established in the 70s. Pretty trees including a good number of Live Oaks (which I love). Lots of hawks around for some reason, which I like. I like hawks.
Also the lots are bigger than the new subdivisions. 1/2 acre each. Not so big that it kills me to take care of it or kills me financially to hire somebody else to do it but big enough so we can do things like sit around having a bonfire.
It was better in 1991 when we first moved in because it and the adjacent subdivision were out in the country. Everything else was fields with cows and such. Since then the population has increased dramatically and most of those cattle fields were subdivided to make new subdivisions. Also there is a primary school right behind our subdivision now.
For some reason there was a change such that, while all of the squirrels around here used to be Fox Squirrels, they're now all Grey Squirrels. I suspect it has to do with changing the environment in the general area to build subdivisions and such.
But it's still nice.

My first water bill was $480 fucking dollars. I almost swallowed my tongue when I opened THAT little piece of mail. I figured out what was going on and quickly corrected the situation, and now it runs $55-$75 per month. Still not great, but fuck ME I almost defaulted on the loan when I got that first bill....
