I'm fine with the Black Twitter thing and all the other things such that Blacks kind of maintain the identify of their subculture or subcultures or whatever and see a "commonality" in being Black while living the Black experience.

I just wish Whites wouldn't be told it's not acceptable to do the same sort of thing.

I don't doubt that there is an association between poverty and violent crime at all. Just saying it may not account for ALL of the difference between Blacks and Whites in this country. Like that first paper I linked above (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~roos/Course ... ssp802.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). The author concluded that the difference between non Hispanic White and Latino homicide rates could be accounted for by the factors she looked at. In fact she even said the rate for Hispanics is a little lower than that of non Hispanic Whites once the factors are taken into account. Poverty was one of those factors. But she concluded that the factors, including poverty, could only account for about half (47%) of the difference between non Hispanic White and Black homicide rates.

If you look at the top of Journal page 367 you can see her speculation about why that is so. For example:

Although large numbers of Latinos and blacks live in extremely disadvantaged neighborhoods, I suspect that the current models of homicide variation may not completely capture the unique situation faced by black Americans in terms of racial discrimination.

To me that kind of thought process is very common. When efforts to "control" for measurable variables fail to explain differences between Blacks and Whites, the investigators typically invoke the idea of "The history of institutionalized racism in the United States" or something like that.

To me it's an example of what I see as egalitarian bias permeating research in the social, educational, and psychiatric/psychological sciences. They start off with an "equality" assumption and see the world through that prism. Like the lady who made that quote above had absolutely no quantitative basis for saying what she said. She presented no evidence at all for the "I suspect" thing. It's just that she failed to "explain" the difference with the measurable factors she could come up with so she assumed there has to be some other environmental explanation of the remaining portion of the difference. She will not entertain the possibility of innate nature as a factor.

Don't get me wrong. Her suspicion could be absolutely correct. But the point is that she's biased. Like I have no problem in saying that it's quite possible that if we could somehow completely equalize the environments the difference would be eliminated. But there's no way SHE would say "It's possible that some of the difference is just innate difference associated with the differences in ancestry between the groups." Kind of like saying Labradors just innately tend to like getting into water more than Chihuahuas do. Not in a MILLION years would she say that. But I would. I'm open to all possibilities. I don't start off with the egalitarian assumption and try to make everything fit it.
