At CCU there were a few black frats that did a lot of community service, and that is to their credit, but the whole pay for friendship is beyond me. My brother was a Kappa Sig in the early 90s. He told me years ago that it was a complete waste of time, effort and money.

It's a funny thing. People who were in fraternities enjoyed them and know what they're really about. People who weren't in fraternities pretend to know what they're about because they've seen Animal House. Are there bad fraternities? Of course. We had two at UD who lost their charter while I was there, and it was no surprise. One was a meathead fraternity, the other was full of drugs. The greek community at UD didn't shed a tear for either one.

Are you seriously comparing military service to a social fraternity? One's a job/career born out of patriotic duty and pride. The other is a group of like minded individuals that go to school with one another.mrklean wrote:But you say you wanted to be a MarineIbanez wrote:

Re: 1 of largest Frats in US bans pledging
I'm with you on that, we didn't do that crap when I was there. On the alum council we stress against hazing all the time. Not only is it pointless, but it also can give the chapter--and national fraternity--bad rep/press. 89hen hit the head with his post. There are good and bad. I'd argue that you get out of it what you put into it, and I'm not talking about dues (the dues are mostly to pay for the insurance that the national fraternity charges). If you really join to be part of a brotherhood with like-minded guys, do the philanthropy work, and use the resources (study halls, mixers, etc.) for what they're intended you will get a lot out of being a brother. If you join to party, you're just going to get parties and a lot of stuff you hate doing.Ibanez wrote:I have 2 brothers and friends that I've known for almost 20 years. That's true fraternity. While I was at App, my chapter worked with the Humane Society in Watauga County and in one event raised enough money to board two dogs for a year and got two dogs adopted. That's not huge, but it makes for a very successful few hours on a Saturday. We also helped build a Habitat house, which was huge for the family that lived there. Additionally, we started a program called "Christmas for the Kids" (unoriginal, I know) that solicited donations from local businesses and provided gifts and food to underprivileged kids and their families. This program is still going strong. There are good, useful fraternities out there...you just have to look for them.

I wasn't in it but I went to a bunch of parties at the Fraternity my college room mate belonged to. And it was LIKE Animal House. It really was. I mean it was really, really wild. I'm not saying it was the same plot but just the general atmosphere of complete debauchery.People who weren't in fraternities pretend to know what they're about because they've seen Animal House.
Maybe part of it is because that was during the time near when Animal House came out. Maybe people were imitating it or something.

Honestly I can't look down my nose at Fraternities because if I was every invited to join one I don't remember. But I honestly don't think I would have joined one if invited just because of the way I am. Whether the stories were true or not I heard about initiations and what people had to do, how they had to let other people order them around and such. I know it's all in good fun but I'm just not the type.

I attended many fraternity parties while at UD. To some extent the fraternities all had their own personalities. I n ever attended a fraternity party that came close to Animal House.JohnStOnge wrote:I wasn't in it but I went to a bunch of parties at the Fraternity my college room mate belonged to. We did have a huge party while I lived at Towne Court apartments when 7 of the apartments in our unit combined to get 10 kegs. That got pretty wild, but still not as wild as Animal House.

I think the Fraternity my friend was in that had the wild parties at McNeese was Delta Kappa Epsilon. I think so because I seem to remember them being referenced as "The Dekes." So I googled and looking at Fraternity names I'd bet that's who it was. My impression was their whole purpose for existence was to have "get smashed out of your mind and act wild" parties.
I also noticed in the Google results that they got banned from Yale.

Re: 1 of largest Frats in US bans pledging
I WILL say that one thing I think was cool about the Delta Kappa Epsilon guys if that's who it was is that they welcomed me to their parties even though I wasn't a member. I can't remember if they ever asked me to pledge or not but I know I never felt any pressure to like I had to quit going to the parties if I didn't. And they all treated me great; just another guy there partying with the rest of them. I just came with my friend that I split the rent on an apartment with and that was cool with them.

Re: 1 of largest Frats in US bans pledging
For the most part we provide assistance to the chapter based on our expertise or experience. For example, I last served as the Financial Advisor. So, I worked with the Treasurer to prepare their budgets, ensure all obligations were accounted for and paid, and so on. We basically are an outlet for them to bounce ideas and concerns off of if they have any. It's nothing too involved, but it keeps the alums involved in the chapter and the undergrads from screwing up too badly. We also work with all alums to increase funding to the chapter to reduce the amount of dues for the undergrads.Skjellyfetti wrote:What the fuck does an alumni council for a fraternity do?
