This has been known for several years, but Tommy Tomlinson just wrote a great piece about Dean and his battle with Dementia. My grandfather passed away last year, and he was battling Dementia. It's just horrible.

On a serious note, what exactly is dementia? Is it the same as senility?

I have watched four of my grandparents and one great grandparent all lose most of their ability to remember current faces, for instance, for anywhere from a week to a couple of years before they died.

I was basically raised by my grandmother during the summers and after school when both of my parents worked and it was definitely painful toward the end when she asked me who I was. Then after I told her who I was, she smiled like I was a stranger telling a fib and proceeded to tell me about me. Luckily she held me in highest regard. I'm glad she didn't tell this "stranger" that I was a complete asshole!

I'm going through it with my dad right now - he has good days and bad days, but he's running at probably 75-80% of his former self on good days and we've learned to appreciate those times. It sucks and it's hard to keep from correcting him when he has a slip...so far it's been a pretty slow decline over the last three years.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia.

Dean Smith has forgotten more about basketball than Monte Ross will ever know.
These signatures have a 500 character limit?

Then again, that's par for the course. Especially if JSO or D1b chimes in.
