The Cadillac Commercial

Post by JohnStOnge »

I love it, even though I would never buy a Cadillac unless they make a pickup truck and I also am not the type who would buy a big house with a pool, etc., no matter how much money I had. Also not likely I'd buy an electric car until the ranges get WAY better than they are now. Still like the allusion to the spirit of the United States...or at least what it would be if we could JUST get rid of liberals/progressives.

Ok so they make a pickup truck. I still probably wouldn't buy it because you'd probably be paying for the name and could get at least as much truck for the money for much less. That would be my assumption and they'd have to prove the assumption false before I'd buy one.

Of course you're paying for the name. Just like you are if you buy a BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, etc. The cars (and trucks) are about 95% the same.

I like the commercial as well. I'll spare the rest of my likes and dislikes and what I would or wouldn't like and why so as to not mess up John's wish list thread...or the various meanderings of why he does not wish for these things.

Half convinced about what?

That he's a troll? Or that he's a great troll?
He's definitely a troll, but I did a study and fudged some numbers: he's not that great.

I am very cognizant of the idea behind the video below. Very aware of how short life is and how you have to savor it. But there's a paradox. If you're not doing something constructive and doing something to contribute you don't feel good. The key is to be able to feel like what you're doing in your "work" life is interesting and at least to some extent productive. I feel fine in that regard. I won't go into detail but if I die today I know I've had an impact on the way things are done in my field. And it's a positive impact. I can look out there and see where things are done in certain ways nationwide because of ideas I came up with.

In the meantime I also find plenty of time to enjoy myself. I go fishing a lot. And I mean a LOT. I play on the computer and on this message board. I watch my kids go through life.

But what the commercial gets at is true. Europe is degraded. It's become pathetic. We're headed there. But we're not there yet and hopefully we can stop the slide

You know my philosophy is that your possessions own you as much as you own your possessions. When I was single I intentionally made sure I never owned more than I could fit into a small U Haul trailer. I was also a "hippie," no doubt. Didn't and don't wear fancy clothes. HATE wearing suits. Drive a 10 year old pickup truck and will drive it until it won't go any more. Then when I buy another one all I'm going to be interested in is practicality. I make a six figure salary and my wife makes money too but we've lived in the same 15,000 square foot 1970s ranch style house that I've lived in for 23 years. Only house I've ever owned. No interest in getting a fancier one. And, of course, I buy grain alcohol instead of trying to impress people by pretending that I have sophisticated taste in liquor.

The poor guy just doesn't know. He thinks he does but he doesn't. He's just another Liberal who thinks he's enlightened when the whole time he's just been programed and brainwashed into buying the environmentalist and egalitarian lines. The cliches. The talking points. Lives totally detached from reality while thinking he REALLY understands but of course those awful conservatives don't.

At least that's what the case is if those lyrics in some way reflect his view of the world.

Oh my god this commercial is HILARIOUS!!!

First guy talks about how Europeans take August off- and somehow that's not a good thing? Are you kidding me? I would kill to have even a week off, and they get a month, and that's a bad thing, because "we work so much harder?"

Since when is working your fingers to the bone a good thing? Apparently in this country it is- same in China where they have installed suicide nets below their factory windows because people keep jumping out.

You know a place where you don't see people jumping out of factory windows? Europe. :ohno:

Then it goes on to trump our fake Moon landing accomplishment: "We went up there and got board and left?" Wow, are Americans REALLY THIS STUPID?? "We left the keys in it" because we're the only one's coming back- reality check: We haven't EVER been to the Moon, let alone "returned in many decades" we never went in the first place! It's like: "Remember that awesome Saturn mission, where we left the hoverboards up there we were riding on, with the keys in them, nobody's going to get to them, because we're the best!"

This guy is walking around his house that looks straight out of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater (making the gullible American consumer feel like that's a "normal house for an American," reality check time only the elite of the elite own a house like that)..

It's just one hilarious bullshit moment after another in this commercial.. wow.

Some Questions Regarding the LEM "taking off from the moon"

1. Who was operating this camera?
2. Where is the rocket exhaust?
3. Why was dust disturbed on takeoff but no dust was disturbed at landing?
4. Not only does this camera zoom, but it also pans- How is this possible?
5. Can I get my taxpayer dollars stolen from me to pay for NASA's complete and utter bullshit back?
6. Is the Cameraman left on the Moon going to be picked up ever?

No, trust me because I spend enough time explaining what I did and providing access to the information I used for you to check it if you want. I also try to remember to describe the limitations on the inferences that can be drawn based on what I did. Like, for instance, mentioning that "Race" in the NAEP data could be a proxy for unmeasurable things like culture even though I personally believe that it's not likely that cultural variation within the context of our society could account for the magnitudes of the differences. There are disadvantages to doing what I do because it takes a lot of verbage. But that's why I do it. And trust me because if you ask me any questions about what I did I will honestly answer them. You'll find over time that I will not intentionally deceive anybody nor will I attempt to create false impressions with numbers.

You may not agree with me. But I'm not going to try lie to you.

Just a thought I had this morning while I was paddling around in my kayak contemplating the universe:

It wasn't people reflecting the persona reflected by that Todd Snider guy in the Youtube videos who brought this country to the top of the heap while doing things like (yes EX man) landing on the moon, splitting and fusing the atom, becoming the greatest economic engine in history, developing the most effective military in history, etc.

It's people reflecting the persona of the character in that Cadillac commercial that did it while people reflecting the persona of that Todd Snider guy threw insults from the Peanut Gallery while contributing absolutely nothing of any use to the effort.

GEEZE ex man we went through a whole thread on that stuff where various videos were posted rebutting that nonsense. You STILL stick to that? Man, you need to shake out of it. Just make an honest effort to look up rebuttals to that stuff and you will find them. And there are very effective rebuttals out there.
