I'm waiting for the authorized Glen Greenwald version, with an intro by Edward Snowden.

Hmmmm. What uberConks, Super Patriots (and other ignoramuses) don't recognize is that Russia possesses, first, an 1100 year history as a confederation of one sort or another and, second, a completely different culture (hallmarks including a "tradition" of brutality and oppression) antithetic to our own very brief one.

People who leave superficial replies such as yours can be forgiven, though, as most are simply unaware. That the modern-day Russians experience the phenomena you highlight above should not suggest that it will always be the case. No, they, as a long-suffering society, will continue to take time to shake off that baggage and one cannot apply the American experience to those of other nations. Nor can we bully them into submission. We've tried, it's done nothing but cause us misery.

As well, the history of China parallels that of Russia to a large degree and prudence may be the way to go with them.

Oh, and your examples above? It's happened and it happens now in the US. We have no standing in those arenas, either, we are not without sin. Put the flag away, Cruz-y.

Ahhhhh, Z, the perfect person NOT to reply to something like that. :ohno:  :ohno:

However you choose to characterize it, it is, nonetheless, a "tradition" and a very unfortunate one. Tradition is a larger word that transcends your limited range, Brother Z, and I understand your vast ignorance.... and forgive you. Recognize, too, my junior college dropout amigo, that the word is in quotes in my text.

I studied Russian History in college and it is fascinating. However, just because they've been around for 1100 doesn't make them the pinnacle of civilization.

Some people can't believe that the Russians and the Soviets were different people. They also put modern ethics and morals on people that lived in the 1400. They way we act today, someone from the 1840s might think we're godless, heathens.

Russia hasn't always been an oppressive, brutal society. Just like America hasn't always been Star-Spangled Awesome.

It wasn't all sunshine and parties, but early in the Russian Empire, before the Tsarists really became oppressive, leaders like Catherine II made great progress in strengthening Russia and even advancing women's education. Russian Enlightenment anyone? Autocracy is a recipe for corruption and descrution, no doubt. But the porgroms and the purges of the USSR and now the humanitarian abuses and corruption of Russia weren't rampant themes throughout Russia's millennium long existence.

it never was sunshine and parties, even under Catherine II, who murdered her husband to gain power. Yes, she made some progress, but like the catholic church dealing with the pedophile problem, it was not much, especially for the vast majority of russians who lived a brutal life in serfdom.

It's not like she didn't have access to the greatest minds of the Enlightenment who advised her to westernize. She didn't and people continued to suffer.

Your definition of brutal and oppressive is quite lenient.
