Exactly. I can't condone it. But I understand. I can totally understand becoming enraged over some punk smart-ass kids messing with your property, getting pissed off about it, and killing them.

I understand that the society can't allow that sort of thing. But if I have sympathy for anybody in this case it's the poor guy who's going to at the least go to prison for most if not all of the rest of his life when he was just minding his own business, some punk kids messed with him, and he lost it. He didn't ask for the situation. They inflicted it on him. And he snapped. So now his life will never be the same.

Although the horrors inflicted upon Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were luridly savage, the national news media was slow to pick up the story. Conservative commentators and right-wing blogs insisted that the crimes were being ignored by mainstream media out of a perverse sense of political correctness — simply because the victims were white and the suspects were black. TV pundit and conservative columnist Michelle Malkin said "There is a discomfort level with stories that have black assailants and white victims... If it doesn't fit some sort of predetermined narrative of how we view taboo subjects like race and crime, there's a disinclination to cover it."

On the "double standard" thing: I don't think there's any question that there is a general tendency to try to avoid casting Blacks in a bad violent light. One recent example is a student at a Canadian university being forced to apologize for simply posting an image from a video crafted by a light night show:

If you pay attention to things like TV commercials you will note that people who rob homes, etc., are always portrayed by White actors. I don't think that's chance. They are avoiding characterizing "common criminals" as Black. Same with commercials on things like identity theft. You see an ADT commercial and the guy breaking a door down is going to be White. You see a Lifelock commercial and all the identity thieves will be White.

I don't think there's any doubt about it. There is a cultural "pressure" to avoid the "Black criminal" impression. Of course it's not possible to avoid it completely because the reality is that Blacks are disproportionately involved in criminal activity and especially things like violent crime and theft. But there's no doubt that the effort to avoid depicting the reality is there.

The crime took place in 2007.

One guy was sentenced in 2008, the others in 2009. Seems pretty normal.

They appealed their case and their appeals were overturned in 2013. Appeals are part of due process guaranteed by the Constitution... so, I'm not exactly sure why their being allowed to appeal their convictions is such a terrible thing?

This. Prisoners tend to have a lot of time on their handa, and a lot of them will file appeal after appeal just for something to do.
