Unfortunately, I don't think that military would be less than 3/4 of the one we currently have. And it would certainly include the latest generation fighters and attack aircraft.
I think it could be cut pretty deep and still meet your scenario. There simply aren't any countries capable of invading the US. The ones that have enough people don't have enough Navy. China will eventually have enough navy but outside part of SoCal there is no place to land the troops. If they land them in SoCal they'll just head for Disneyland. :coffee:

The problem with the F-35 is that it has a pilot and we are rapidly approaching the day when combat pilots become obsolete. The F-35 won't be useful for very long if in fact they ever do get it right. Kinda like the old B-36. Very soon after it took wing it was rendered obsolete by jets.

No, just explaining that there is a perfectly normal reason why Klean couldn't join the Navy. :coffee:

I remember the shuffling around of barely qualified recruits at the MEPS station in Raleigh, NC- these guys had issues... either they had minor criminal records, fallen arches, or were just plain dumb... they always got shuffled over to Army and Navy. I was Navy so I don't have any axes to grind, but it was well known that the real dregs of the recruit world wound up either as mess cooks in the Army or Navy.

That said, the absolute most difficult rating to get into in any service was nuclear in the Navy.

OK. First off, there's no such thing as a staff sgt in the Navy. An E-6 is a First Class Petty Officer. Secondly, kleanex, you're asking two different questions: While many nukes take 2 years to get to the fleet, they don't come out of "A" school as an E-6...."A" school is what nukes attend right after boot camp...and "A" school length was different for Machinist Mates (shortest), Electricians Mates (longer) and Electronic Technicians (longest). 99% of nukes (of which I was one) come out of their "A" school an E-4, after graduating boot camp as an E-3 (although some only come out of boot camp as E-2's). Once out of A school, THEN they begin Nuke school (6-7 months), followed by Nuke prototype (another 6-7 months), sometimes with another follow-on school or two....So, most nukes end up getting to the fleet as a senior E-4 or an E-5....which still pissed off guys on the ship (non-nukes), many of whom were E-2's and E-3's and already had a WesPac or two under their belts. :coffee: :coffee:

Nukes come out of A school as E4s. Nukes aren't the only rates to do this, either- crypto and highly technical ratings also get bumped on graduation from A school. They used to be called "push button E4s" but I am sure by now they have a new nickname for them.
