Grocery Shopping Parallel to American Economy

Post by bluehenbillk »

So I goto the supermarket Sunday morning.

Apples (all grown domestically) range from $1.99 to $3.49/lb.

Bananas (all foreign) sell for $0.59/lb.

Do we subsidize apple farmers? Cost to grow fruit greater in America vs elsewhere? What gives?

Apples are grown by people from Washington. How will they afford Google Glass, a gluten-free diet, and other hipster douchebaggery if we pay them like Guatemalans?

That can be placed under the hipster douchebaggery umbrella.

They do pay the people who harvest them like Guatemalans, because they are Guatemalans, and Mexicans. You really think a hipster from Seattle would last a day in the apple orchards?

Apples are not in season. Bananas are. The apples you are eating now were harvested in October.

Bananas are also much easier to grow/harvest.

Apples are always a lot more expensive than bananas are. May be a good reason for this but just wanted to let you know.
