Reagan's daughter Patti Davis, 60, tells The New York Times that her father -- who had a checkered history with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community during his presidency -- would have supported marriage equality and "been puzzled" by the opposition to same-sex marriage.

People wondered why Reagan, a man who for decades dealt with openly gay men and lesbians in Hollywood, would curry favor with bigoted homophobes like The Reverend Jerry Falwell. Some argued that that Reagan was a “closet tolerant,” meaning that he it was nothing personal against the minority groups he baited; it was just politics. Whether Reagan was personally racist or not, is irrelevant: he promoted a certain atmosphere. Rosalyn Carter discribed this atmosphere perfectly: ""I think he makes us comfortable with our prejudices."



So he was happy to throw his friends under the bus for political gain.

I suppose it's OK to wish happy birthday to dead presidents. We've been doing it for George and Abe for years.

But hardly anybody remembers Jack Kennedy's birthday. They just remember the day he got capped.

And Reagan still looks better than that old sanctimonious schoolmarm Rosalynn Carter and her hapless husband. Jimmy's been on my celebrity deathwatch list for years.
