Of course it is, but you can't liquidate land very easily, especially in bad times, and environmental regulations are decreasing the value of land more and more with wetland definition changes and increasing buffer requirements.

Dollar cost averaging is about the best thing a non-insider can do, unless you have a ton of time on your hands to research stocks or want to pay loads to an advisor.

Once upon a time I was a big reader of Kiplinger's personal finance and Money magazine, then realized that by the time the rag was printed and distributed most of the info and recommendations were pretty much worthless. To your point, unless you're an insider it's pretty much like driving with the rear view mirror and expecting past performance to be indicative of what will happen going forward.

I keep an eye on it probably monthly, do a few tweaks as necessary, and otherwise let it ride.
