Am I wrong in thinking it ain't cool to joke about someone dying? I mean, thank god bandle isn't here. All the countless PMs he sent me worrying about whether BFPU or Lizgrz had kicked it.

Smug? Nah.

We simply prefer eating and drinking fresh products that haven't been processed and sugared or salted up. Smarter/healthier choice.

Seriously though...there is nothing on that list I purchase. We don't buy sodas, so that takes care of a large chunk of that list, and I'd imagine that my response would be the same for a list of Pepsi products, too.

But, Dasani? That's just water with a touch of salt.  My wife doesn't buy sugary yogurts, so she avoids Dannon (if you are going to actually eat yogurt, eat some healthier stuff and add real fruit instead of consuming processed sugars). Bacardi? Nope.

Minute Maid orange juice? Yuck. :tothehand: I noticed, though, they recently are promoting their new unfrozen, not-from-concentrate orange juice...has to be an improvement from the frozen crap. On the other hand, just grab an actual orange/tangelo/clementine.

Congrats!

Sodas aren't that hard to give up...and you are much healthier (and wealthier) for it!

Empty calories...and an expensive way to not actually quench your thirst. It is amazing that our society has been tricked into drinking crap instead of simply drinking water.

I have a buddy at the embassy in Wellington and they're going to have to pry him out of there with a crowbar when his tour is up. Aside from the cost of living it is one of the more coveted posts in the foreign service.

Two hours northeast of Wellington on a sheep farm in the Wairarapa region, mostly. My wife was presenting a paper in Hamilton so the university paid her airfare and I have a friend there that I met 40 years ago bumming around Europe. His farm was only a few miles from the epicenter of the recent quake but at the time it hit they were picking us up in Auckland. Do not miss it if you have the opportunity to go. If I were a younger man I'd lead Immigration on a merry chase.... well-run country with a lot of common sense.

It's not so bad. But it reflects the idea that multiculturalism is a a strength. And it's not. It's a weakness. It's a reality that must be dealt with and managed. But it's not a strength.

For example: A country in which everyone speaks one primary language with little variation in proficiency, all other things being equal, is going to be more efficient than one in which there are numerous groups each of which has a different primary language.

You may find it ironic that the first person who introduced me to that concept was a Black high school World History teacher. He went through the problems created when countries have numerous dialects while contrasting that situation to what the situation in the United States was at that time (i.e., English was the overwhelmingly dominant language and everyone could communicate effectively with each other).

But he was/is right. And expanding upon his point multiculturalism is a problem to be overcome, not a treasure to be embraced.

Can you think of any strengths to multiculturalism? Or is it only a weakness?

Can you think of any strengths to multiculturalism?
I suppose there might be some situations in which someone might see an angle that otherwise might not be seen. But I really can't think of any specific example.

But, on balance, I think it's a weakness. It's like asking: Group 1 has everybody on the same page. Group 2 does not have everybody on the same page. Which group has the advantage?

Of course it could be bad if everyone in Group 1 is on the wrong page. But I don't think that's the situation here. I think that there is, historically, a "United States Culture." And I don't think it's been on the wrong page.

I think that there was a time when immigrants were expected to adapt to and be assimilated into the larger "United States' culture. I don't think it's like that now. I think it's become more a matter of the United States culture having to adapt to the immigrants. And I think that's a mistake.

You can call it Hitler's world view. But it's obviously true. Take 10 people who all speak the same language and understand each other and can relate to each other. Take another 10 people who all speak different languages and don't understand each other or relate to each other.

Which group do you think will be more effective? It's pretty obvious.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
"The unmasking thing was all created by Devin Nunes"
