National Pravda Radio had a blurb on today about self-esteem. It seems that if you falsely inflate someone's ego, they start feeling good about themselves. But, the longer term result is that they start to avoid challenges (in order to avoid any crash from their high feeling) and they do poorly on tests. Eventually, the person doesn't do as well. However, if you provide firm, critical, honest, feedback, a person will work harder and seek out challenges.

In other words...no participation trophies. They actually hurt a person's self image. Self-esteem is highest when people work their way through tough situations.

I have no idea as to what he said. I heard he said something. From what I heard it doesn't sound like he's a thug. Just sounds like maybe he's a jerk.

But count me among White people or people in general who don't like trash talking. I think it's low class behavior. I think it pretty much indicates a lack of class and maturity on the part of the person doing it.

Then you have never played sports at a high level or have any combat training. Trash talk is all mental. Just like the 1st/7th Cav(Air Mobile) use to fly into combat in NAM with Jimmy Hendrix's music. But you think its a bunch of black guys acting like thugs. Trash talking is about getting into a persons head. Ali was a master of it. So you can call it low class or ghetto all you want but it works!!!!

I didn't play at a "high level" but I said things to people on the football field, in hs and college, and basketball court, in hs, that I would never say/mean off the field.

I'm about as far from a thug as it gets but it happened.

I never played sports at a high level but trash talking is practiced at many levels in many different areas. I've had it attempted on me plenty. And it doesn't work because I know what it is. And if you're in any kind of competition with someone who has a brain they know what it is too.

Like I remember playing in a men's league basketball thing. No it's not a high level but the same stuff goes on. I remember this Black guy trying that on me talking about how I had no shot, blah blah blah. And I just looked at him and very calmly said, "Well, if I give up then I certainly have no chance. But that's not going to happen." No responding in kind. Just a matter of fact statement issued in a "Mr. Spock" tone. Shut him up completely. He didn't know how to deal with the way I was acting. Perfectly impervious to his attempts to get me going.

They did win. But I knew why he was doing it to begin with. It was because his team was getting a lot more from the team I was on than they were expecting. They were accustomed to beating the crap out of everybody they played and it wasn't happening.

Same thing happens in the professional world by the way. Don't talk about what you're going to do. Don't waste your time with me doing that crap. Just do what you're going to do and see how it turns out.

Again, it's not just high level sports. It's throughout life. And it's a waste of time if you're trying it on people who know how to deal with it.

Ali didn't win a single fight because of that crap. I suppose it's possible he made more money. But he won the fights he won because he was a freak of nature. He could have conducted himself with class and done just as well in terms of wins and losses. Just too bad he chose not to do that because his legacy as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time is tarnished by how much of a caricature ass he made of himself.

And more broadly there's no evidence that that crap makes anybody or any team any more successful in terms of winning and losing. If the guy on the other side is better than you he's still going to be better than you regardless of how much trash you talk. And if you're better than him you're going to better than him whether you talk trash or choose to conduct yourself with class. Makes no difference at all.
