Coen: Lehigh Football in "right direction"

Post by dbackjon »

BETHLEHEM | Lehigh University football coach Andy Coen was all smiles after Saturday afternoon's annual Brown and White scrimmage at Goodman Stadium.

The reason: quarterbacks J.B. Clark and Chris Lum threw two touchdowns each to lead the offense to a 53-20 victory, the "vanilla defense" tallied a couple sacks and had an interception and Jarard Cribbs blocked two extra points, taking one for a touchdown.

"I was happy with how the quarterbacks played, particularly when they were on the move," Coen said. "They scrambled out of there a couple of times and made nice plays. We haven't made those plays in the past couple of years and I think we have the ability to do those things now.

"I think we're going to be a really good defense again. I feel confident having watched them after 14 practices. They forced one turnover here today. If you were at this game a year ago it was probably six or seven, but that's to the offense's credit."

To highlight the second drive, Lum connected with fellow sophomore Travis Artim of Whitehall on the sideline for 29 yards and on a slant in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown.

Not to be outdone, on the opening play of the fifth drive, Clark -- 15-for-20 for 92 yards, two touchdowns -- rolled out and hooked up with senior receiver Jim Potocnie of Whitehall for 14 yards and finished the drive with a 25-yard score to Craig Zurn.
