2013 ends with weakest job growth in 3 years

Post by BDKJMU »

"Hiring slumped sharply in December, as the economy added only 74,000 jobs, according to the government. This was the weakest month for job growth since January 2011 and came as a huge surprise to economists, who were expecting an addition of 193,000 jobs........

.....Only 62.8% of the adult population is participating in the labor market now -- meaning they either have a job or are looking for one. That matches the lowest level since 1978......"

That isn't uncommon in long period of stagnation. You have a large number of people completely dropping out of the workforce, combined with a smaller percentage of people who have given up trying to find the jobs they want, and going with the jobs that are available.

The drop to 6.7% is primarily because 273,000 dropped out of the job market (were not looking for jobs) so those 273,000 were not included in the number even though they were in November. The drop was not due to hirings unfortunately.

Taken alone, the +73,000 jobs is not a good thing. This could be a blip though like July 2013. October and November had good hiring numbers. If there is another month like December, then it is a reason for bigger concern

You mean the U3 #? Yeah, the U3 dropped according to the same people who fudged the U3 # before the 12' election...

Meanwhile, the U6 is at 13.1%....

That article was a prediction before the numbers came out. See that it was filed at 12:00 am on 1/10. Numbers weren't released until 8:30 (as stated in that article)

We hear about those whom have "given up on finding work". What the hell do these people do day in and day out. Ya gotta eat for Christ's sake!

Mostly they get their food from the Food banks
Seattle has 17 Food Banks

I work at the University District Food Bank on Wednesdays
We provide what's called BABY Cupboard which is a full bag of baby supplies like Milk and fruit
as well as regular services like food delivery to poor old folks
and a regular style soup kitchen (which is a blast to work a lunch rush there)

If you want to help

Thanks for the link. I have been giving to Food for the Poor for the last several years but am starting to look at giving more locally.

You'll love it...
Its more fun than people realize
The soup kitchens (linked to the Food Banks) are always looking for dish washers and food prep people and the folks you'll meet working there and also the folks who need the FOOD are some of the coolest most awesome people ever... (there is also the occasional super crazy fuck)

But I highly recommend it!

I was involved with a Lutheran group that used to host a soup kitchen 4 times a year and yes, you will meet some interesting people, but people with the same feeling as us nonetheless.

I was born and raised Pentecostal but left as soon as I got adult age. TRUST ME! Since then have been Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Episcopalian. Not necessarily in that order. Have good from them all, but prefer the Episcopal Church for the openness. Got tired of the Catholic church telling me that eating meat on Fridays during Lent is a moral sin. PLEASE!!! I love this new Pope though and the fact that he is making half of them itch tells me he is doing the RIGHT THING!

You're right. I would still hate to see what the TRUE unemployment rate is in America. :ohno:
