That's more along the lines of what I was thinking too. But exempting those who qualified for college would be a compromise that might get more on board with the idea. Also a carrot to get better grades.
During the last draft you had to actually get good grades to get into college. Now just have to be able to pay for the application fee (if there even is one) to "be a Phoenix".

And I'm not knocking online degrees. My masters was done online.

Yeah, I would say that if you want to do college, fine. Do college.

But you aint voting and you aint getting your citizenship until you take your turn at the tiller.

Both my dad and I enlisted in the military while we were in college, and we are both advocates of its maturing effect. I would recommend the military before college to anyone.

Let me check with Merriam and Webster...

Nope, neither Merriam nor Webster said that the definition of "compulsory" involves loopholes.
Well then you just screwed up college athletics recruiting. :tothehand:

You have a point. There were plenty of kids that grew up with me that wanted to serve and many that did enlist. In fact, most of the burnouts that couldn't get into college after HS(graduated 2001) are either still in the military or got out after 8 or so years and are working with good jobs. I tried 5 times to enlist in the USMC and then the Army but b/c of bullshit when I was 2 years old, I'm "unfit." What a bunch of bullshit that is.

Careful, kleeny: you're starting to sound like a conk!

I agree that the concept of national service needs to be revitalized in some way. But that will have to wait for another administration.

I like this idea.
Great idea!! But make it 2 years of compulsory National Service. There is plenty of "stuff" that needs to be done.

Compulsory military service would be a bad thing, no? The last thing we need is more thugs that know how to shoot! And then we all know that if the government has a huge asset, like a bigger military, they'd find more reasons to use it.

I do like the idea of compulsory National Service before you get to vote and get government benefits. No exceptions...not even college. And no cronyism or nepotism. If a Senator's son draws the job of cleaning the inside of a carrier's nuclear reactor, or the hippo toilet at the National Zoo, then that is his station.

Speaking of compulsory service, we should also implement a law that says if a member of Congress, or the President, chooses to send our people to war, they must have a child serve directly in the combat zone. A spouse substitute would be acceptable. And, our leaders should also have to spend at least a month each year on the front lines (without special protection)...you know, since it is so important to have our people there. Heck, they take more than a month off from their job in DC, so they should be able to make it to, and stick around, the war party zone. And the CEO of any company that wants part of a defense contract should also have to serve in the combat zone. :thumb:
