Communist Utopia

Post by Col Hogan »

Rolling Stone is really going off the deep end with things like this...

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/ne ... r-20140103" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This guy wants to take a "social safety net" and make it the baseline for everyone...jobs for everyone doing what you like with automatic deposits into your account...

Meh...Idealistic, written by a millennial for milleanials. Crony capitalism and Reaganomics are to blame for this push back.

Rolling Stone must've printed an article meant for the Onion.

He succeeded in getting his 15 minutes of fame out of this.

Nobody in here is younger than 23 years old and therefore should be questioned on why they are reading Rolling Stone in the first place.

Enjoying thinking about the suffering, war and mayhem the children and grandchildren of prominent cs.conks will have to endure as a result of the unfettered greed and stupidity of their conk spawners.

 Listen here gramps...

I opened up RS this very morning and listened to the new Broken Bells single. Aside from that, journalist/authors such as Hunter Thompson, PJ Orourke, Cameron Crow, Joe Klein, Michael Hastings, and of course Taibbi have written for it.

Its articles like the Patty Hearst Abduction and Stanley Mchrystal were big time stories. Stick in the muds might not like it, but it's a journalistic heavy and always has been.

Wow  Just wow.

1. He wants a Roosevelt type WPA program? The one where folks would go out and create/maintain roads and bridges? Yeah, I'd like to see the turnout on day 1 of millennials for some hands on physical labor.

2. Universal basic income? Nice idea, everybody gets a check for doing what inspires them. Any idea where the government gets the money to finance things like this? Guys getting a check for painting subway murals probably aren't tossing a lot of coin back to the government or completing all the boxes on Turbotax every season....

3. My idle landlord charges me too much. Waaah. Here are some ideas - 1. Get some roomates. 2. Get your girlfriend to kick in some cash. 3. Move somewhere that you can afford instead of where you think you deserve to live based on your income. :ohno: As far as your "idle" landlord, how do you think he acquired his real estate? Divine intervention, or hard work, saving, and smart investing so he has the pleasure of dealing with whiny people like yourself?

4. Have government buy up everything so it's owned by everybody. Great idea, except for (again) the issue of how government gets financed. We don't have enough money for basic services right now, but we should be buying up manufacturing plants and airplanes to "give back to the people". :?

Nice try, Lenin.

I have a way to get these unemployed layabouts on their feet: two years of compulsory military service when they graduate high school.

I think that would do more to bring Americans together and give them a common experience than anything else that could be come up with.

That's not a bad idea. I would have been better off if when I started college I was as mature as I was when I finished.

The problem with any kind of substantial mandatory military or public service is that depending on what president or congressional majority proposes it, the people in the opposition party in congress will use all kinds of inflammatory rhetoric to get people angry over it. It seems like a legal and political minefield to me.

Won't ever happen.

Are you saying that it is automatic for everyone or just those that can't enroll in college and can't find a job?

Let me check with Merriam and Webster...

Nope, neither Merriam nor Webster said that the definition of "compulsory" involves loopholes.

I used to be on board with this kind of thinking, but not anymore.

The last thing our military needs today is the discipline issues that would come with this crowd. The military is already under assault as a gargantuan social engineering project, and adding a bunch of unemployable misfits to the mix would be the final nail in the coffin. It would make the results of the Vietnam draft look like a shot in the arm.

At the end of the day, Bill Buckley said that a free nation should exhaust every effort to field an all volunteer military and I agree with that. If the layabouts really wanted work and the military was the only thing available then they would have already volunteered.

Look at the last draft. Layabouts and actual unfit people will find a way not to serve. And let's not even broach the subject of consciencious objectors. I'm sure the remaining Quaker Meeting Houses would see a resurgence if compulsory service was ever implemented!

Maybe you could offer the option of two years of some type of national service, like helping to rebuild "the infrastructure." 8-)

Hmmm, sounds like a pretty good compromise in the long run.

Everyone serves in the military.... single payer health care system, universal GI bill, etc.

Not bad. I'm on board.

I'd be on board with it if we had compulsory public service. This would include military service, social work, teaching, and public safety.

And I wouldn't stop there. Get rid of citizenship by birth and make the above a requirement for citizenship and the franchise.

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking too. But exempting those who qualified for college would be a compromise that might get more on board with the idea. Also a carrot to get better grades.
